I lost my guinea pig Lily tonight. Rushed her to the vet this morning and she had a suspected URI so was given an injection of antibiotics. I was told to monitor her and if she had improved by morning then we would continue her treatment. If she was not to improve or get worse it would mean it's most likely something more severe and would require intense treatment. Sadly shortly after syringe feeding her about an hour ago, she just started dying. It was so sad she kept trying to run away but she would've ended up injuring herself so I had to hold her. She just went floppy and passed. After seeing her tonight I was genuinely considering having her PTS tomorrow as she looked so sad but her own body made that decision first. Poor Lily, I'm so sad and her best friend Petal is grieving and won't leave her side.

I am ever so sad. URI can sometimes hit very fast and hard, so that even with the best and promptest vet care there is nothing you can do. :(

So sorry to hear this :( its so traumatic when they leave us so suddenly. I'm glad you go to be with her until the end- thats one wish i have for my girls.

I'm so sorry! I just lost my Fibi last Friday and I can relate to how you feel.

Thank you so much everyone. I do hope she was comfortable when she passed but to be honest I don't know if she was happy. She was trying to run away from me off my knee and onto the sofa, I think she was panicking as she was trying to get a last gasp of oxygen. :( I feel so guilty for not letting her run away but she would have injured herself, she was so weak. I just held her and tried to comfort her and it was then she just sort of collapsed. My Mum ran to get Petal and we placed her next to Lily as she was dying. I don't know if Lily even knew she was there as she seemed to be unconscious as she took her last breaths but I hope she knew. I'm so upset.
