Ive just been to the vet with Lincoln as he hasnt been himself lately. i assumed the vet would just say i was being silly and that he was fine!
His diabetic 8...
I cried my eyes out when she told me. She said not many people choose to inject them everyday with insulin but i can if i feel best. If i dont he will just get worse until he dies.
His life span has also been shortened :( I'm a bit if a mess at the moment i knew something wasnt right.
I'm definetly getting the insulin theres no way I'm letting him down.
Poor lil man

I am so, so sorry to hear this.

sending many hugs I know how special Lincoln is to you.:rose

oh i am so sorry to hear this.

what were his symtoms again?

I didnt even know piggies could get diabetes?

Sending big hugs to you and Lincoln Chez.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

oh honey. my love goes out to both of you, thank goodness you went with your instincts xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Oh Chez I'm so sorry! I know he means so much to you. Do you trust the vet? I mean you don't need a second opinion or anything?

I would give him a chance too, it's treatable, just enjoy the time you have I'm sure he has many years left, bless him. x

I'm booking an appt at another vets for tomorrow as i just need to know its definate! dont want to be injecting him if he dont need it. I'm so upset! Why Lincoln! his my life :(
His tired all the time, wee's all the time, eating less but drinkin loads. She checked his urine and it had high glucose.
I just cant get my head around this.

aww poor lincoln. I think its best to get a second opinion, just to be sure.

Oh the poor little dude. Just think - lots of people manage fine with diabetes, there's no reason why Lincoln won't!

Sounds like it to me. Any living being that has a pancreas can develop diabetes. It's a condition, not a disease. For some reason that they haven't discovered yet, the pancreas stops producing the insulin hormone which is what balances blood sugars and allows the body to use energy from food. When this happens, the sugar stays in the blood as it cannot be absorbed and the body starts to take energy from other resources - e.g. fat - which aren't as efficient. Once you sort out his insulin routine and diet, you should see him perk up in no time!

As for the shortened life span thing, I'm sure it's the same as with us humans - balanced blood sugars = less problems. I should listen to myself!

Does that mean you dont think his life span has been shortened??

Does sound like diabetes doesn't it? A second opinion is best though, with something like this it pays to be sure.

I can only go by humans, my nan was a diabetic for 30 years and she lived to the good age of 86 so with the right treatment I don't get why it would shorten a life span.

The thing is though once you start the injections I wouldn't stop as that would make it ten times worse.

Have you looked at Guinea Lynx, there may be something there about it? (((hugs)))

I'm so sorry to hear this Chez and hope Lincoln is okay cos I know how much you love him.:( I haven't heard of a diabetic guinea pig before. Do you need to test the blood for sugar every day like a person with diabetes does? Some diabetes can be controlled by diet in people - wonder if this is the same in guinea pigs?/ How old is Lincoln? ?/

thanks. His only 1 year old. The vet just told me i would have to inject him everyday. I would have to test him urine everyday aswel. No fruit *** of natural sugars in it etc. She said a controlled diet wont help but i dont agree. Ive tried looking up info on the net and cant find any. i thought maybe there was a particular food i could give him or something. His sleeping alot so I'm going out tomorrow to buy him a bed. Want him to be as comftable as possible.
I dont know what to do from here. I need to make sure he has everything. just wish i knew more about it.

There is a really good Rodentologist not very far from you that I really suggest you see as he will be a great help in supporting the treatment of your little man.

If you are a CCT member you can get his contact details from them but if not I could let you have them if you PM me?

This bit seems interesting.:)

In corresponding with dozens of owners of diabetic piggies, I've learned that most guinea pigs develop Type 2, non-insulin dependent diabetes. Another oddity about diabetes in piggies is that remissions are common. An informal survey I took suggested that as many as 1/3 of diabetic piggies eventually regain the ability to regulate glucose without medication.

thanks so much Nemo :) I'm going to see that rodentoligist starshine recommended hopefully. I'm going to ring him tomorrow. so fingers crossed he will see me and Lincoln and help. thanks everyone for your support x

The symptoms sound like diabetes. Does he have cataracts?

Good luck with the insulin. You will do just fine. Love to you both - Lincoln has always been one of my fave piggies on here! I love him in his car....

Bless him, I'm so sorry to hear he's having these problems. I wish our small babies didn't have to go through stuff like this. You are obviously a wonderful piggie mum though so we all know he'll be treated like a king and well looked after. Big hugs x

I'm sorry babes but your being a great mum looking after him this way. Best of luck with your special little guy x

Awww poor Lincoln, sendings hugs to you both xx

Good luck with the injections and let us know about the 2nd opinion.

No he doesnt have cataracts (luckily). And thanks so much for your comment about Lincoln. Its nice to know how much people think of him. puts a smile on my face x
Well he is one gorgeous lad so what can you expect?:)

I'm so sorry to hear about lincoln, that must have been such a shock for you. I hope he will start to feel better again soon xxxxxxxx:rose

I am so sorry to hear about Lincoln - just as well you went with your instincts and took him to the vets. Good luck with the injections! Like others have said I would probably take him for a 2nd opinion to another vet just to be on the safe side. I know how much you love him and how hard this must be for you - hope you are ok.
