I know there have been so many questions regarding hay but I'm wondering exactly how much hay you get through in a day? In handfuls? I started my lads on the Timothy 5 a day which initially they devoured but I'm noticing that their eating less and less of it! They seem more interested in chewing the log bridge! Soooooo can anyone tell me what they use and how much goes in a day? I'm going past p@h in abit if anyone buys from there?
Many thanks

I have only noticed how little hay my pigs eat since i finally got a hay holder last week. Could have saved myself a small fortune over the years! They do have the cheap meadow hay from b&m which is mainly for bedding but I'm sure they eat a fair bit too.

But the oxbow timothy - i always put a massive handful just on the floor of the cage and when i had stan, he and benson always dashed to it and seem to especially love the strands with the ears on.

there always was timothy scattered all over the floor though. Now i am putting timothy in the hay rack (just a small p@h one) they've never emptied the rack. Maybe half a handful a day if that BUT stan is no longer with so theres benson who is a pretty big fellow at 3lb and little mike who is barely a pound yet.

Huh maybe my boys are eating enough then, I just assumed they would get through loads of it! I think mine are getting through a handful a day, I was thinking of trying the bags of herbal salad that b&m have started selling nature something? It was called. Think your supposed to sprinkle it on their normal hay.

My two pigs 3 month and a pregnant 5ish months eat almost two big handfuls each day. I fill the rack with one handful in am when I put them back in their cage for the day after morning run and veg and another then another in pm (same routine)

Well I am going to put abit of the normal Timothy 5 a day and the burgess excel dandelion and marigold hay that I've just bought and see what happens, I've also got some of that natures herbal salad as a treat :D mind you as I'm typing this they are munching away on the Timothy 5 a day hay

We get through about 4 big handfuls a day (2 in the morning, 2 overnight) There is varying amount of waste but I prefer to have it in trays so they can sit in it, dig in it, hide under it etc and display some of their natural behaviour, so it isn't all about the nutrition iyswim. They do pee and poop in it, but they don't seem troubled by that!

I want to start providing some hay to sleep and play in. what is the best to use, I would like to use something less expensive than the timothy since they go through it so quick eating it already but I don't want to get something they shouldn't eat....

Sometimes we get through quite a lot. We use a spiral hay holder for timothy hay but they don't always eat it from there so have to put handfuls in too. I line under the house bit of the cage with Wilko's meadow hay & am just trying them on B&M's meadow hay (thought it was worth a try at 1.99 a bag). Like a poster above said, I like them to be able to play with it (because of course they always want that piece of hay at the bottom), they lie in it, use it as a toilet etc.

They have a seagrass ball, a basket, wooden bridge, toilet rolls and a cardboard box too so plenty of things to nibble on.

I fill four litter trays up three times a day for my boar and five sows.I go through a lot of hay as I have two rabbits as well

Thank you for all of your replies!
I have got it Sussed now, they don't like eating it out of toilet rolls or anything that holds it! I have put the cheap b&m one which is only 99p, the Timothy 5 a day one and a bit of the burgess excel in litter trays and they are eating loads! They love to do a massive belly flop into the tray and lie in it while they eat :))
