Exciting, but also sad, news.

Unfortunately, Dasher and Donner have been spoken for, and were just not taken off the website in a timely manner. This was bad for me, as there are no other pairs around me at the moment. Only singles.

BUT

The shelter was able to point me towards another pair nearby them that were just matched together. They aren't ready to bring home yet, but they will be halfway through March, which is perfect for me! I was told that as long as they're healthy and I can prove I'm ready to house them, I can get them when they're ready March 21st!

I'm very excited! Also nervous; they're a bit younger than I was expecting. I know that you guys here will be there to help me along the way though!

Pigtures!

I'm thinking of naming the brown and white one Kenai, and the black and white one Koda. No idea what breed in the world they could be, beyond adorable!

2 little puffs of fluff thats what they are 😍 how exciting for you. How old are these babies now and are they far from you? I'd just advise you to read as many guides as you can on here to feel super prepared for their arrival and also if they aren't from the rescue (but somewhere else) you'll need to make sure you get assurances about their health (and that they are properly sexed). If you are doing this via the rescue you can ask how they do this in advance...I'm sure others can advise on this in more detail.

The last thing you want is more piggies on your hands by accident but it does happen.

Gosh I know, they're so gorgeous. I love them already.:love:

They are pretty far, even farther away than the rescue, but not by much. That's why they didn't appear for me anywhere. The drive will be about 3 hours and some change, which I'm a bit nervous about, but it's better than 7 hours or something. I feel like I've read every guide on here two or three times already, but it never seems to stick T~T I'm wondering if I should take notes...

They're around 3 weeks old, or so I've been told. They're from a small center south of the place I was going to go... I'm assuming because they're in contact with the larger shelter that they're an okay place, but I'll do some digging of my own, and see if I can find out about how they sex their piggies and how/if they vet check them. I'll provide updates as I discover more things! The closest listed cavy specific rescue to me is in Texas, so to be brutally honest, I just don't think there's a lot of information around here about the Midwest and guinea pigs.

I know, I think they're amazing and I don't even know them yet. I love how one of them has some curly looking fur. It makes me really curious as to what they'll look like as they grow!

I'll be sure to post plenty! Probably a picture or two on the way as well, since it's so long that I'm sure we'll have to stop at least once :))

My cage, liners, and supplies have also been ordered, and I'm just waiting for them to get here as well! I'll make sure to post pictures once I've gotten everything put together and set up for them, or at least the basics. I've still got a lot of potty pads to sew :lol!:

The left one looks like a Texel and the right, although hard to make out, looks like a type of Abysynnian to me. Really cute pigs. You might need a good grooming brush too as they both look like the crazy hair type 😂

That's so awesome if that's what they are! I adore the long haired guinea pigs. And the smooth haired. And literally all of them.

I thought texels hair laid more smoothly down their back though? They both look like they've got mohawks, I love it.

I'm also totally in love with the little spot of brown above the left one's eye that makes him look grumpy  You can see it in the first picture. You can also see one really scraggled looking whisker.

I've never had a texel but this is a picture of some...it was the wavy hair that made me think that. Certainly no expert though!

@Black piggies A piggy baby shower sounds really fun xD

And @Darcey15 Those texels are so cute! Maybe he is one then, they sure look similar. A quick search told me the other types of curlies are merinos, alpacas, and lunkaryas. He could be a mix of any one of them, although the only guinea pigs I've heard of with the curly scraggle whiskers are supposed to be rexes? I guess it's just a waiting game until he gets older. Same thing with the one on the right too I suppose. They're too young for a long coat to have grown in yet, right?

That's exciting though. Crossbreeds are amazing. Always full of fun surprises and quirks.

Yes its fun working out what cross breed they could be. I have one which is a sheltie (long haired) in the body but her grey face is exactly the same as my agouti who has short grey hair so when they poke their head out of my run tunnel I cant tell which is which until their body comes out too 🤣 they are on my piggie thread 😊 hope it all goes really well for you- will watch with interest x

I just went and looked, your piggies are gorgeous! Are you talking about Shelby and Vimto? They do look really similar!

Do you have any tips for grooming with a brush and/or trimming long fur? In case they are both crazy haired ones.

I used to have a bearded dragon so I'm less worried about trimming nails than I am about trying to give a wiggly piggy a haircut!

@Julie M Thank you! They're so tiny, and they're going to be in such a big cage... I know too big isn't a thing really, but if feels like it knowing they're that tiny right now.

Don't worry my chip was like 340g when he came home. Now he's huge. Lol 😂 DSC_0130.webphes the piggie at the back.

Only thing I would say is if it's a c&c cage then I'd either raise the sides of the corex when you build it or cover the sides higher up with cardboard so no little ones become stuck in the grids.

It will be a C&C cage, a 2x6 with two half-height lofts! I think that's 215 cm x 69 cm on the bottom floor? It should be here and made hopefully in the next two weeks! Everything I need for them to come home is purchased except for a few small things like a large piece of pegboard, food pellets, veggies, and other small doodads.

As a cat proofing measure and now I guess as a baby proofing measure, I am going to put hardware cloth on the grids with zip ties. Hardware cloth is wire mesh that's usually used to keep rabbits and other critters out of garden areas, and the holes are usually like 1/4" big. I was still debating either to put them inside the grids, or outside. I'm worried about potentially sharp edges if I put them on the inside, but I'm not sure if they can count as baby proofing if they are just on the outside of the grids?

Ah thankyou. Yes I meant Shelby and Vimto 😍 you're lucky to be starting off confident with the nail trimming, that makes alot of people a bit nervous, including me especially the black footed pigs. I cant imagine what its like cutting a dragons nails!

In terms of grooming, Shelby needs the most attention just because her hair constantly grows. They are mainly outdoor pigs and can get a bit dirty at times being on the grass & using the tunnel to the shed so she is more prone to matting round her bottom. Winter is worse so I groom her more then using a soft brush & snip out any matted parts (they are impossible to comb out as it would hurt her). I use a foam shampoo which just goes straight on and give her a trim to keep any longer hairs off the ground. I have a before & after pic on my thread....she loves being groomed so I just do what I can but I dont shampoo or bathe them often, only when its really needed..maybe every 2-3 weeks this winter. I use a cushion which each of them sit on quite still so I do grooming & nail clips whilst I've got them in one spot.

There's all sorts of grooming bits and pieces you can pick up at the pet store 😊

I put mine on the outside and as long as you have the cable ties tight it should act the same as if it were on the inside. None of mine escaped and it’s now been taken down and rolled up for if I get any babies in the future.

Alright then, I'll put it on the outside! I was leaning towards that anyways, since the edges of hardware cloth can get kind of sharp. I just wanted to make sure it would still be counted as baby proofing if I did that, because the primary goal is to keep the cats out.

I am literally dying of cuteness.

Don't be fooled like I was at first, there are two guinea pigs there! I thought Koda was Kenai's butt for a while xDDD

I am so in love. Look at their crazy hair! And Kenai's curly whiskers, they're so scraggly compared to Koda's straight black ones! And Koda has such silky black fur, and Kenai is so curly and wavy, but still spiky! And Kenai's grumpy Eyebrow!

There is literally no part of me that isn't 100% in love with these two boys

I'm even more confused about their breed now though! I have no idea what they could be. They've got such absolutely wild hair, and I thought curly whiskers were a Rex only thing? And they've both got super prominent ridges of hair down their backs as well, but they're long-ish haired?

Anybody have a clue at all?

I am indeed very excited! Though still thoroughly confused about what in the world their lineage is. I haven't seen guineas looking quite this... random? Before

Mabe abysinian x peruvian? Just a guess. They are so cute!

I habe 4 long haired guinea pigs and regularly trim their hair esp around their back end as they do get damp from wee. I prefer not to bath them.

Maybe abysinian x peruvian? Thats only a guess. My four could be that. My fifth one is smooth haired as you can see!

Maybe! At least for Koda, the black one. Your second one has that forward ridge I can see on Koda! I did some looking about mixed peruvians and abysinnians, and they're called Shebas? But Koda looks like his fur has more wave to it than your absolutely adorable herd?

Kenai has such short wavy fur... if he were a texel, wouldn't it be longer by now? And he has that big mohawk too... Ahhh I'm so confused by the cuteness!

Wow- did you visit or did they send you new pigtures? They look like they've grown but the hair has gone even crazier. Sooo cute!

I got update pigtures! For sending cage and supply pictures, to prove that I'm ready ^-^ Their truly is just insane. I'm gonna have to figure out how to give them haircuts real fast...

I'm quite nifty with a pair of scissors although banned from doing human haircuts since my children were toddlers and now refuse but guinea pigs I can do 🤩 (they complain less too).
