I was trying out a new stockist the other day for rabbit food and so was questioning them about their piggy food whilst I was there. Now I've always been aware that piggy food costs more than bunny food but I've never known why. Well, the owner explained to me that in this country, rabbits are part of the food chain (whether we like it or not!) whereas guineas aren't and so VAT is added onto guinea food but not rabbit food. Interesting eh?

You'll probably all say 'I knew that' and make me feel stupid now but thought I'd share anyway.

I guess if 17.5% is the price we have to pay to keep our babies off the menu then it's worth it :)

I didn't know that and would never have guessed!

There is one rabbit food that has VAT and that's Burgess Excel. That's probably why it is so expensive. I've no idea why this has VAT and not any others? Anyone any ideas?

I didn't know that - odd vat rules!

The Burgess excell pellets in my area are still £3 or £4 pounds dearer for guinea pigs then bunnies - but may be because none of the pets shops stock the 10kg bags of cavy food so I have to order them in especially. They all stock those big bags of bunny food - strange.

So is it okay to give rabbit food to piggies? My local farm shop sells tropical rabbit food which smells really fruity and contains dried banana and is still less expensive than GP food.
