I may have to let my 3 guineas go to a new home...most likely all seperate, because someone may not want 3. I think I am allergic to them. At first I thought the allergies would go away and everytime I hold one, I get these read ichy spots that come up on my face or neck where the guinea pigs fur touched me and a week ago today, I have this dark red splotch on my face and the same looking dark red splotch on my stomach and I never had anything like this before and for some reason I think it has to do with them. I had cleaned out their cage last Thursday and the next day I woke up and couldn't hardly talk and I have been fighting the alleriges all this week and these splotches won't go away. My hubby says I could try to keep just 1 out of them all but I didn't want it to get lonely if I am not here and then if I seperate them all, I keep thinking that I will wonder if someone has them in a big cage like I did or if they are giving Ruxpin his pepper that he loves, etc...I don't know what to do... :'(

I'm so sorry you have to give them away :'( must be very hard for you. as well as knowing your allergic to them :(

Go to the doctors and have those rashes checked out a blood test will tell you what it is. Then take all your piggies to the vets sounds like ringworm to me. Do not rehome your piggies untill you have taken them and yourself for tests and had the results. Most of all do not panic.

I wondered if it was ringworm, but I thought ringworm was just like a ring and not filled in, in the middle....? It iches REALLY bad...so bad that I almost want to claw it at times. I have them indoors in a large open closet in a large house in our walkin closet in our bedroom. The only way I could put them outside is if I bought something new to put them in and it would have to be big for 3 of them. They are all still young...just a few ounces over a pound in weight and I don't know what else to do.

OMG, I just looked at some pictures of ringworm on the net and some of them look like what I have.....!! I wonder where it came from? I have never had it before...could it be my guineas afterall?

I would just get yourself and the piggies checked out as soon as you can. Please do not worry but promise me you will get appointments sorted out for you all tomorrow. I really think you should do this before considering any other options. You need to find out what it is before anything can be done. Just think if you got rid of you beloved piggies and you still had a rash you would go to the doctors then you would feel awful about getting rid of sick piggies.

Yes now piggies need the VET and you need the DOCTORS tomorrow. Now its treatable and you will be fine your not pregnant though are you need to ask?

No, I am not pregnant. I have 2 places and am going tonight. My hubby mentioned that this can ge gotten by cleaning out the cage....I do know that the next day it came up after I cleaned out their big house...

Good glad to hear your not pregnant it is dangerous to baby if you are. Now get yourself sorted out then get the piggies sorted out with a vet. Thinking of you take care. All will be fine. speak tomorrow its midnight here I am in the uk.

Oh you poor thing :( :(
Please get treatment asap, it's most unpleasant my grandfather had it, but he was cured with creams and tablets.
Keep us posted, i do hope you'll feeling better real soon :)

Guinea pigs can sometimes get ringworm and pass it on to their people and vice versa. Some peopl are more prone to infections like that, whcih is why we had to take back two piggies recently (though only one had it and it was treated). You should go to the doctor and they should go to the vet and then go from there.

Please remember I'm in Georgia as well and I have my own rescue. If it comes down to it I'd love to help out. I could get them a home where they'd have a great C&C cage, would be adored, get their veggies (peppers for Ruxpin), and once they're adopted I'll give you the new home's email address so you can talk back and forth and keep up with them. I'll even do my best to find a home that will take all three of them. I hope it won't come to that, but if it does I wanted to make sure you knew I'm here.

Well...it was ringworm alright and I have this cream that TOTALLY helped the itching. It will be here a few more days though as it takes some time to go away, but the itching being gone is great for me. The piggies go tomorrow, very early, because I have to work in the office.

Kimmie, my hubby wants me to find them a home, so if it is urgent, I will let you know about taking them. I have some feeling that this has to do with Chester....a while back I posted that Chester had this crusty stuff that was spreading from his one paw to around his mouth. I pick him up quite often and I was told he had possibly something that is fungal and ringworms are fungal and I could have somehow gotten this from him. I will know for sure tomorrow I guess. Talk Then.

It can't just be caught by cleaning the cage - it's not something that's normally just around on the pigs or their environment. The pigs will have been infected themselves and passed it on to you - sadly ringworm is about the only thing that can be passed from pigs to humans! Usually once it's cured, it's cured. Hopefully you won't have any reason to rehome them.

awww thats so sad! I hope you get the piggies sorted out and you find out whats wrong and *hopefully* you will be able to keep them! O0

Either way it sounds like something that may be easily solved so good luck O0

It is very easy to catch ring worm. If you sit on a park bench where there has been someone or an animal with it & you rest your arm/hand there you can get it. Don't beat yourself up! remember its actually a fungal thing & not an actual worm O0

OK, the results, Lenny and Ruxpin are fine and healthy. Chester has still a small spot of some fungus stuff on his paw but its almost gone. I had been putting something on it and it has helped. They said they didn't know if the ringworm came from them, because none of them actually had it. So, as for now, the guineas will stay with my sister until I find them a home. My hubby and I talked and he wants me to find them a home. Not only because of what was mentioned but because of the allergies. I had to do another cage clean last night and again, this morning I get up and I am just like last week, so he says it will be better for me to find them a home. We have 2 small children ages 2 and 1 and he just thinks it is best to find them a home. I will miss them, but I can't go everyday like this. I havent ever had allergies like this until I got them. I still thought of keeping one of them, but they all 3 do very well together and do not fight and I would rather them all keep a home together.

I got it and I replied. Did you get my reply? I said,

"How do you mean? Would you like for me to take them and get them a home or do you mean how should you go about doing it? If you’d like me to find them a home I’d be more than happy to. For some reason we don’t have many boys (a total opposite of normal rescues) but we have people who want boys, so I don’t think there would be any problem at all having me find them a home. I may even be able to get them homed all together, but worst case scenario would be keeping the two that are most bonded together and getting the other a buddy. Is that what you want to do?"

ive had it before, not caught from one of mine but a friends guinea pig who was dying a few years ago me and my mate both got it, i had a severe case but it was only in one spot luckily, it itches, weeps and the medication is tablets and cream..normally you get cream to start with but its crap if you have it bad so maybe ask for tablets.

you have to make sure you keep eveything clean, not share towels or anything as its very easily spread.
