Last night I came home to a very sick guinea pig. With this virus going on I didn’t have anywhere to take him. This morning he passed away on my bed. I only had him for three weeks, and I can’t stop blaming myself. Anyway, here’s my beautiful boy. I miss you Hermes❤️

I am so sorry he didn't make it. Please don't blame yourself, you tried hard to get him seen as an emergency which just wasn't possible in this current situation. Also he may already have had an underlying condition when you got him.

Oh no that's so sad.
Was piggie poorly when you got him. this is very usually.
When I adopted him, He had poop caked into his bottom, with a bump on his rump, but I took him in and they gave me a cream. It was working great, stopped getting so red. Went in for a check up vet said it looked great. Then he got a respiratory infection, but it wasn’t bad, he had X-rays taken, no abscess on the lungs or anything. Just give him medication. He was struggling to poop, so I gave him bene bac, didn’t seem to help. I guess I wasn’t thinking when I gave him the treats that the “Easter bunny” gave him. Now that I’m typing this out I’m realizing I gave my Guinea pig with stomach issues a brand new treat he’s never had before. I basically killed him.

Please don't blame yourself @Sullivancourt , you clearly did everything you could to make sure he got vet help and it seems he came to you with I underlying conditions that caused his death. They are prey animals and hide any problems they have. You don't know whether his Easter treats had anything to do with his illness, as he had existing problems. You were only showing him that you loved him.

ok. thank you for the info.
seemed your piggie has problems before you got him. it's really hard when this happens.
There's hundreds of things that can happen to a piggie and digestive system is very touchie.

Thank you for saying that. I do have another piggy, probably within the next couple weeks I’ll be looking for another mate for him.

Sorry for your loss.
You clearly gave Hermes a lot of love in the last weeks of his life and that is a precious gift

I am very sorry for your loss!

You have done your best for a guinea pig with obviously some massive underlying issues. Humans are wired to always look for the fault in themselves first and foremost. Soul-searching, intense feelings of guilt and failure are typical for the onset of the grieving process. I highly doubt that the treats killed him; a tummy upset doesn't normally lead to multi-organ failure. Something else underlying must have been already very, very wrong and waiting to happen sooner rather than later and without any input from you. It is more likely that the diarrhea was the first symptom of the body shutting down.

Keep in mind that you have given your piggy love, care and access to veterinary care - anything a good owner should do.
