At the moment, my pigs are using this..

http://www.zooplus.com/shop/rodents/accessories/hay_racks/348327

All they seem to do it pull it out and spread it everywhere. Half their C&C just gets covered in hay. So much is going to waste, we've gone through a 1kg bag of hay in just over a week. Can anyone recommend a different solution so that things are a bit tidier and less is wasted?

Thanks

I just put hay in a pile as mine like to play in it. This creates a more natural environment for them.

I've tried quite a few hay racks, I think hay everywhere is just part of having guinea pigs!

Mine have a mix of hay bags (for the posh hay) and big piles on the fleece and in correx kitchens.

I don't think hay rack are good as I heard a sad story on this forum of a piggie dying because of a hay rack.:(

Piggies will be piggies! Making a big mess with their hay is par for the course, seems to make them very happy, even if their owners sigh about it.

A litter box with newspaper and a big pile of hay is the best hay rack I've ever had!
They manage to keep it in the box too so it saves my fleece from getting all hay-ey!

I have this one and it's great! I use it for my younger pigs as they can put their front feet on the top and eat from there if they like. I tried another one with my 5-6 year old pigs and I felt bad as they like to be a bit more elderly about eating their hay and now I just set it on the floor of their pen after I do their poop cleans in the morning and evening! For my rabbit I ended up just sewing the arms of an undershirt, stuffed it with hay, and flipped it upside down so that she can eat the hay out of the neck hole of the shirt. Works like a charm lol

I have a cat litter tray in my piggies fleece lined cage which has Fitch in it covered with hay. When I put a new heap on the tray Boris gets so excited and popcorns everywhere!

My boys refuse to eat out of hay racks - probably because they know I'm such a softy I don't have the resolve to force the issue, they just get cat litter trays full of hay to dive into, they spend most of their lives in them! Yes there is more hay 'wastage' but given the enjoyment they get out of it and the fact that it doubles up as a warm bed in the winter then I don't consider it a waste.

1kg a week is a small amount isn't it?! :)) i think using lots of hay and making a mess is just part of it. garden potting trays work well so the hay is still on the floor which they love, but it's contained. so they get to burrow and play, and they tend to toilet mainly in there, it holds alot of hay, and you can just remove it each day to clean and change easily :)
