Well my guineapigs breathing is sounding very congested and clicky I'm very scared to lose him. Pleases someone reply.

Hello and welcome!

As you will appreciate, it is impossible for us to diagnose your piggie over the Internet.

The only way to get a diagnosis is to visit a vet as soon as possible, especially if he/she seems to be seriously ill.

Please let us know how you get on.

Visit a vet asap. It could be a respiratory tract infection which is quite common. Is there any discharge coming from your guinea pig's nose?

Hi and welcome

Respiratory infection can kill if left untreated. You need to see a vet for an antibiotic which is a prescription only medication; respiratory infection in guinea pigs is not a viral, but a bacterial infection. Please see a vet as soon as possible. The sooner you do, the better the chances of a good and full recovery.

If you have got a new guinea pig (less than 2-3 weeks after sale), you can reclaim the vet cost from the pet shop.

Until you can see a vet, you can place a bowl of steaming water next to the cage to help ease the breathing as much as possible, and keep it refreshed. This is just a stop gap measure and not a cure.

You also need to step in with syringe feeding as soon as your guinea pig is losing more than 50g of weight. Weigh daily at the same time in the feeding cycle. The need to breathe comes before the need to drink and only thirdly the need to eat. This is why it is so important to keep your guinea pig's guts going if the appetite is affected. No amount of medical care will save your guinea pig if the guts slow down and then stop working. In an emergency you can use mushed up pellets for feeding, as long as you prep the syringe tip as shown in the guide. Needle-free syringes are available from any pharmacy.

If you are lucky, it is something else that is causing the nasal congestion, but that is for a vet to decide. If in any doubt, he will treat for URI (upper respiratory tract infection) first and foremost before looking at any other avenues.
