Hi there! i have owned guinea pigs all of my life and never had this problem before.

Felix, my 7 year old guinea pig has started with a problem, he has everything in his diet which is required and he still gets the same problem.

His 'poo' seams to get clogged up inside of him which then causes him to have the runs as he is using alot of pressure in order for him to be able to pass his 'poo'.

Every other day i have to bathe him in order for me to help remove the trapped and compacted poo.
After it has been removed by myself his poop goes back to normal and hes happy as ever, jumping around like normal.

I have no idea what is wrong, i though it could be his age! But then it cant be because it cant be comfortable for him at all!

Help me?!? i have no idea what to do! :'(

Oops, meant to press 'quote' not thanks mallethead
Sounds like a typical case of impaction, common in boars of a certain age. You sound as though you know what you are doing and your boy has a happy and normal life otherwise :)

Well he seams happy in him self, it just worries me because of his age that he isnt doing so well. But he seams to happy like i said.
Hopefully if i continue helping him he will be fine :)
Thankyou. :)

i think he may have an impacted anus, it usually occurs in older boars and is caused by slackening of the anal muscles, has he got a bulge behind his testicles? the lump has to be expelled byprising it out from behind by the thumbs while the fingers roll back the opening, if it is this unfortunately he ill have it for life x

Thats wierd, i thought it was like a rare thing to happen because ive never had it before in any of my guinea pigs, i mean ive had them get tumours, skin conditions all of the ones which are common and then i noticed this with my Felix. It scared me alot!

Nothing to worry about. Just impaction. It needs a good cleaning out every day or two so as he doesnt get clogged. Its a common problem in older boars.

Loves to Felix.

i have just gone and got some very smelly poo out of pepper, i have read that you need mineral oil to do this , can some one tell me what this is and where i get it? i just used warm water this time, but want to do it properly tomorrow, also read he will now need vit b to compensate for lack of it due to not getting it from the poo he should be eating? can someone tell me a bit more about this? he is such a lovely boy, and we want to do whats best for him x

p.s. Your guinea in your picture is BEAUTIFUL ! :)

It sounds like there 'Coalon' is failing. I think you need a to take it to vets. They might be able to check & help.

After i did the clean out and helped him, he seams to be fine and going back to normal. But i will take him to the vets if necessary. Not that they will do anything due to him being so old.
