I have a problem; my dad went and got an allergy test today, and apparently he is extremely allergic to Timothy hay. The doctor said "no more timothy hay in the house." Well as we all know, pigs need unlimited timothy hay. What am I going to do? They also tested him for guinea pig allergy, and he is very mildly allergic to them, so he said I dont have to get rid of them. But how am i going to provide my babies with hay if i can't have it in the house? We can't put them outside for two reasons. the main one is that i have four very murderous cats and they will absolutely harass the pigs until something bad happens. and number 2, is that it's been an average of 90 degrees out lately, obviously way too hot for the pigs. I really don't know what to do! can someone please offer suggestions? is there any other kind of hay i can give them that will be suitable? i know alfalfa is too high in calcium. mallethead

Hi love what about meadow hay and storing it in bags in a shed?
Do a search in the US and see what other products you can find :)
I will ask some of my mates whatelse they use for you XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Thanks Glynis. He said maybe we can cut it up really small and store it in a plastic container, and just put out a little bit at a time. Hopefully that will work, but it's definitely going to be tedious :(

Well if he's prepared for you to do that...... that's at least something positive :)
If you put it into smaller bags and then chopped it up outside would that help?
I've also emailed a few of my lovely mates in the US and asked for some advice, when i hear of anything they suggest i'll let you know :)

I will get red eyes and a rash around timothy hay. It also stings my nose. Use orchard grass or meadow day. Orchard grass is best though, as it doesn't have as much of a smell as meadow hay.

They dont need timothy hay, it is a popular brand with piggies but they dont need it. Mine have rarely had it, mine are fed on dist extracted meadow hay. x

mine are fed on meadow hay too
i am allergic to the hay & my piggies but i dont care i just take my anti histamines every day
i also have asthma but it is controlled well
i don't have any problems if i take my medications
i didn't know i could be allergic to my pigs but i couldn't part with them now , no way !
hope you find a solution soon

If your dad is only allergic to Timothy then you can just give meadow or another tye of hay and maybe try the box of cut up hay as a treat ever so often!?

Orchard grass hay (for the US) or meadow hay (in Britain) is perfectly fine. They just need to eat a bit more for the same result, that is all. I vary between hays anyway to keep mine from being too choosy in an emergency.

Your dad may be happier if you could store the hay out of his reach.
