I posted on here about a week ago that one of my piggies, Snak-Pak was itching so much he had scabs and was scratching them open again. On Tuesday I was checking him over and it looked like he was losing hair on his belly. I took him to the vet and he really didn't seem to know what he was talking about. He was reading stuff from a book and telling me stuff I already knew. He did a test for mites and lice, which came back negative and then tried to tell me that he could have ringworm but I really don't think that is it. I work at Petsmart and I have treated sick piggies with ringworm and I don't see anything like it on Snak-Pak.

After a very expensive bill the vet told me to give him 1cc of Baytril twice a day, and to rub a cream used for athlete's foot on his scabs. I had to separate my two piggies but they seem very lonely since the separation. Both piggies are still itching and I am afraid I am treating Snak-Pak for the wrong thing. My boyfriend thinks Ivermectin will do the trick but before I do that I want to know what you all would do. Thanks! x>>

I would certainly get another Vet opinion before doing anything else :(
Hope someone can give you more constructive advice than I can offer :)

Thanks. The money is an issue for me though. I am currently filling out graduate school applications and I have spent about $800 on that. 8...

Can you post pictures so we can have a look?
Our rescue members have come across lots of skin problems so I'm sure someone will be able to advise.
You could also look at Gorgeous Guineas website at the photos there to see which condition it looks like.

you should be abk to get anti dandruff shampoo containing Ketoconazole (sold as Nizoral in the UK) in a pharmacy. This will help with ringworm, but should also soothe skin irritated for other reasons. it's listed on Guinea Lynx as safe.

The guinea pigs don't need to be separated - but they will probably both need to be treated.

One of our pigs was given a skin test for mites, it was negative but the vet still gave us mite treatment for 2 months and all the skin problems cleared up.

Sorry for the poor quality of the picture. The vet had to shave him and the darker little spots are the scabs. I feel like the ointment is helping, I just am not sure what the Baytril is for, but he HATES it! :)>>>

Cant see very well from your picture I'm afraid, but if the ointment is working its probably telling you its a fungal problem. Ivermectin is available without seeing a vet, its not a prescription med. Or at least isnt here, have a look to see if it is in the US. The usual is 3 ivermectin treatments 10 days apart is the usual treatment for severe mite problems.

Have you posted on the guinea lynx forum? I wouldn't normally recommend another forum on this site, but as you are from the US, they may be able to help you find a vet in your area that is cavy savvy. Good luck.

We can get Ivermectin here without a prescription too I am just worried about giving him something too strong. Thank you all for your help! :rose
