I really need some ivomec i remember Hill78 knew where to get it from but for the life of me i cannot find the Thread, i am taking my gang to the vets but i think it will be cheaper to get the ivomec from a distributor the vets mark up won't be on it, bl**dy lice, i am having bad trouble shifting them and my hay is shop broought in a packet, can anyone also recommend a REALLY , good disinfectant to use in there cages to combat any yuks that could be lurking there.

The cages get disinfected once a month with detox but i think it need to be used at each change??

Please help?

Formula H or Trigene are the best disinfectants I've found - I noticed Formula H in PAH the other week too which is great!

If you do an internet search for ivomec for sale I think the suppliers website will pop up but please no one post their details directly as we have had complaints about it from the supplier in the past.

There is a spot on Ivomec made by Belphar which you can get at petshops now but i have not heard great reports about it to be honest.

Have pm'd you.
I'mnot sure Ivomec 'does' lice because they don't live off the blood like mites do. I am really not sure on this one though, I bet someone will be on soon to put us right O0

posted at the same time there! I was going to put for lice I think certain shampoos is the best killer of the little beasties.

Ivomec doesn't kill lice!

You need a lice shampoo like Lyclear or Prioderm cream shampoo from the chemist or Lice and Easy shampoo from Gorgeous Guineas. Some people also use small animal parasite spray but I don't like it as its smelly!

Ivomec is for mites etc - lice are little crawlers so they need external treatment.

To my knowledge bathing them, disinfecting their hutch, bowls, bottles etc and keeping them on paper without hay, sawdust or any other bedding works.

It does until any eggs that might not have been killed through shampooing hatch then it all starts again grrrrrrrr!

That's why you should keep them just on paper so the lice don't have anything to hide on/in. O0

Guinea pigs NEED hay 24/7 its 80% of thier daily diet.

I know but it's either the hay or the mites, it has worked on numerous occasions. :)

I thought i had posted earlier,(i bet i deleted it ::)) The pigs have bitten themselves to scabs, one of them Runt had it round her neck I took her to the vet about a month ago now and saw a locum vet and he said she had been mobbed by the herd, Runt unfortunately is the lowest ranking sow so i thought well yes possible, so i took her out and paired her with another quiet sow used the cream vet gave me and thought no more about it,
i just happened to be giving Runt the once over yesterday and she is all open around her neck and between shoulder blades and her cage mate is thinning on her back, and one boar is chewed on his rump so I am not sure, just jumped to the lice/mite theory sorry, I must say the are booked at the vets for tommorrow couldn't get in today ?

Aww hope all goes well sounds like mites vet will inject them all with ivomec every 7/10 days might need 4 lots normally three good luck at the vets. get some gorgeous guinea lice and easy on order then once they have all had 2 lots of injections give them a bath in the shampoo. Hopefully that should help with their skin.

Does your piggy have access to eating hay though?

My guineas and rabbit get Burgess Timothy hay and Herbage and am trying to get other types of hay but they are not easy to get.

I don't fancy the idea of my pigs paddling in pee to be honest. Mine always have access to hay if a bad batch comes in (mites) I throw it away. Fortunately this has only happened once. I like my animals to be able to burrow in the hay. I have a couple of very old pigs & I think that if I expected them to go to sleep on a flat sheet of newspaper it would be like doing the same to my granny - & she used to like a soft bed which wouldn't put too much pressure on her joints. So mine get a good layer of newspaper, a moderate layer of Megazorb & plenty of hay too. They also get a hay rack or ball so there is always fresh unsoiled hay to eat.

all of mine are on thick hay except my 2 oldies they have half a run with a towel and 2 cuddle cups for them and the other half is for hay to eat they often choose to lie on the hay but much prefer to snuggle in the cuddle cups which get washed regularly but they need hay all the time to chew on even if mine are on vet bed in the medical run they still have hay in there

Good to hear that they do have hay :) I think some people thought they didn't have any at all.

Anyway. why don't you experiment with some other bedding? Fleece, towels, vetbed? :)

wanted to let you all know m gang have got mites :-\ and are now under the vet for an injection god i forgot i think it is every week or two weeks , will have to have a look on the card, so problem halve solved, now for the GG shampoo

oh well my guineas aren't selfish they shared it around little toads ::)

One of my guineas have to stay on paper, the other two have wood shavings and when it gets to cold they have hay as bedding. I have used towels in the past but apart from them woudln't use anything else. Paper is a great help in treating problems such as lice and it does soak up urine just as well as any other bedding. :)
