Hello guys,
I'm new here, and sadly on Thursday my guinea pig passed away. But i was wondering if you could all help me find out why. The past week, she has been on and off with her food, and due to that she's obviously been losing alot of weight, and not very active and a bit wobbly on her feet. On wednesday i picked her up and noticed there was diarohea on his bum and tummy, so i cleaned her up, and noticed one of her eyes was clammed shut, as there was eye discharge in both of them but her other eye was open but also with discharge round the eye. And i said to her darling if your not well dont hang on sweetheart, i dont want you being in pain.
Next morning, i went to feed her, and she had sadly passed away, her body was stiff so obviously regamortiss had taken its toll, which made me think do you all think she passed away nearer the time i told her no to hang on?
And i noticed her eye was open and her mouth was open when i picked her up when she died so do you think she died of a heart attack or what, because thats what my Mum thinks.
I'm finding her death hard as ive had about 7 guinea pigs in the past 10 years, and now i haven\t got any at all, keep thinking i must feed her when i wake up but then reality kicks in and i remember she is no longer with me.
Please help me on this topic as it is bugging me, will appreciate anyone who replys.
:(
Thank you

Louise

Hi Louise,

Welcome to the forum, was piggy being treated by a vet at all? It does sound like she had a URI (upper respitary infection) antibiotics may have sorted her out. With ill piggys you need to keep their systems going so syringe feeding is a must if not eating either critical care available from vets or mashed up pellets fed with a syringe or a tea spoon.

I know its hard not knowing why they pass away, guineas are so good at hiding illnesses. I lost one over Christmas and she was not ill at all. So we assume it was a heart attack. As your pig had closed and crusty eye this is a classic symptom of having a URI but without a Post mortem its hard to tell.

Was she your only pig or do you have others?

Louise

Thanks for the information.
Yeah i forgot to put in earlier she was seen to a VET and given antiobiotics, and it cleared up her chest and she must of had it back quickly before she went.
She was my last guinea pig, i dont have now.Which is weird as for the past 10 years ive always been around them, i brought 2 from pets at home once and they were pregnant, obviously i didnt know when i got them but when they were showing it was exciting, and they both ended up having 3 babys each, so i had 8 guinea pigs! And the one that passed away on thursday was one of the babies. Trying to tell myself she in a better place, with her Mum, brothers and sisters x

Hello and welcome to the forum.
I am so sorry that you have lost your piggy but unfortuantly, when a pig is poorly, they can go downhill very quickly. As Louise said, it does sound like an URI. Was she old at all? Maybe her body just wasn't strong enough to shake off the infection if she was old. Do not beat yourself up over it. If you go to the Rainbow Bridge section, you can leave a post about her in her memory. I bet she is now playing with her parents and brothers and sisters x

She was 7, and they live 4-8. even though i've had one that was 9 years old! God bless her soul. x
