My male piggy Rocky was down in the dumps last week but then seemed to pick up. Well on Saturday decided just to check him over only to find a massive lump on the inside of his leg! Hes had a really small lump there from when he had his operation to clean an adcess, but was discharged almost 4wks ago and was told to keep an eye on the 3 small lumps as they were just a bit of a reaction to the stitches, so I did. I checked the lump near his leg just before he went 'down in the dumps' and it was fine now its the size of a large marble, could it have inceased due to me touching it? Could it be an infection even after all this time?? I'm takin him to vets tomorrow but I'm in such termoil. The OH hasnt got a job, my car seriously needs fixin and now this, I just dont have the cash! Ive not mentioned nothin to the OH cause if he finds out he needs more money spending on him he'll go nuts and insist he be put to sleep! And I refuse to do it! I'm suppose to be takin the car to the garage tomorrow but I'm going to purspone it till Tue or Wed but I'm dreadin how much this vet trip is goin to cost me. I did think about taking him to the PDSA as we get free treatment, but I worry incase they dont know how to treat him or look after him properly, plus it can be a nightmare getting an appointment. What should I do!!

PDSA, is a great place, my mum volunteered there for a while, there quality of vets is just the same as everyone else, you just have to be aware that does mean tightness on spaces as it's free, but sometimes with cancellations etc. you can get an early appointment :)

I think if you can get free treatment from the PDSA, give it a go as your situation seems to call for it :)

Maybe when money seems to be going a little bit more your way you could just make a donation to the PDSA aswell :)

Post op abscesses are not uncommon and don't necessarily come up at the time. There's no doubt about it, that your pig needs a vet. IF you can't afford the vet care and your other half does insist on PTS, please try and rehome him many people and rescues will take on an animal with problems.

If I was really that strapped for cash and had no option I would consider the PDSA - they are vets. Obviously you aren't guaranteed someone who knows what they are doing but I imagine they all care about animals so would do there best.

I hope you find a solution, it's rubbish when everything goes wrong at the same time. Wishing your boy a speedy recovery.

Hes fine in himself, hes still eating and still comes to the bars, but I know that piggys can hide illness very well. I think I will have to ring my vet in the morning and see what they say (hopefully wont try and charge me to see the vet as its ongoin from last time). I think I will just have to stick the charges on my card and just deal with it when the bill comes after xmas. I tell you this xmas and this year has been awful, I just want it to be over!

Christmas does have a strain on incomes - I know how you feel and I don't have my own family.

I think people forget with all the Xmas cheer, that our purses aren't never ending. I wish it wasn't such a commercial market.

i would love to take him pdsa but I need him seen litreally tomorrow and if he needs an op and AB to be all done by tuesday so I can get the car to the garage as I will be without it probably till the end of the week. I think my own vet is the best option cause I'm hopin that if I can get him seen early enough in the morning they might operate on him the same day, if I explain my circumsatnces and if he needs meds or further help its not too far but the PDSA is quite a bit further. GRRRRR Why does c**p all happen at once!!

Well fingers crossed for my little man, I'm really hoping they can sort him tomorrow.

Well went to my vets this morning, theyve taken him in and will operate to remove the abbcess. I fell like such a bad piggy oxwner 8... Poor might had a scab on the lump which must have formed yesterday as it wasnt there yesterday mornin 8... But there was no way I could of taken him yesterday as the cost would of been enormous! The vet has agreed to give me the zithromax on a private prescription so that I can get it from the chemist and she will precribe the whole 5 bottles he needs, as I explained that I had to get the car to the garage tomorrow as its on the verge of breaking down. Now I'm just praying he will pull through, even the vet said that hes very unlucky, I just never thought that after 4 weeks of being fine it could happen again!
Luckily the cost is ok £41 for the op and I'm not sure if they charge for the prescription, but even so the cost is within budget.
So please send healing thoughts for my little man and pray for some luck for him as he needs it.

Don't blame yourself and good luck :))

Sending healing vibes his way x

Healing vibes :laluot_29:
Hopefully he'll be back to full health soon. x

People thinking of neutering pigs please ask your vet to use glue ratherthan stitches. I have had many boars neutered and have never had a post op abcess after using glue ,but have had several after stitches . Some piggies seem to be allergic to the stitches.

The vet just rang, and they were able to remove the abbcess, and hes recovering well -c.
I did mention about the fact that if she could glue rather than stitch as alot of piggys seem to react badly to stitches, hopefully she took that on board. Just cant wait to bring the little mite home!
Gotta sort out where hes going to go as I only have 1 indoor cage so he might have to go into a large box that Ive got until I can borrow or buy another cage. I'm just soooooo relieved hes pulled through the op as if I had lost him I would dread havin to tell my son as he adores him.

Thank you for all your good vibes and keep sendin them as we dont want it to come back!

Well hes home! I'm so glad.
The vet has left the wound open, not sure why but I think its to do with the fact that its really quite swollen and on the inside of his leg. Also got the zithromax on a chemist prescription, just got to find a chemist that stocks it or can order it in for wednesday, anyone have any suggestions? Been told to try and keep his cage as clean as possible, I'm going to buy some training mats for the bottom of the cage, to help absorb the wee, also got to do salt washes and put this honey stuff they gave me around the wound twice a day, thank god I'm not squeimish (unlike my son who couldnt bare to look!). Hopefully the healing will all go well, any tips on keeping the cage as clean as possible or to help him recover would be greatly appreciated.

Do you house him on fleece? This is very good for keeping wounds clean even if you choose it for only short term.

Abcess wounds *i believe* are often left open so they dont close and get reinfected.

Goodluck, wishing him a speedy recovery!

I dont have any fleeces but got an old bed sheet and have cut and folded it to fit his box, but I'm going to get some training mats tomorrow as they are better at absorbing wee and staying dry.

sorry i have only just found this thread, glad he is back home with you, and hope he continues to get better quickly x
