Hi everyone,

My piggie Teddy is almost 2 years old male guinea pig, unnurtured. And he is been with me for over a year.
Some hours ago he started making some strange noises I've never heard before.

He was just finished eating his morning snack at the time he started making these voices. I took him out to check and I felt like his belly was bloated a little bit... But to me it didn't seem alarming. If it was some other time, i'd just think since he just ate veggies his belly is simply bigger.

Since I have some experience being a piggy mother, my rule of thumb is if he eats, it's good. And even right now he is munching on some weed, his poo is fine. He was drinking a lot of water right before I gave him the veggies.

So this is the back story, I managed to record the voice, you need to pump up the volume to hear Teddy though:

He is not constantly making this voice, from time to time. I haven't found any information about this sound online. I'm worried that he might be in some sort of pain (because to me he sounded painful), but I can't see the reason? I'm looking for someone that can enlighten me about what Teddy is trying to say

Hi welcome to the forum! From the recording, I couldn't really tell what the strange noise was. Was it that little, faint squeaking noise around the middle of the recording, or the loud crackling sound at the end?

I would take him to the vet just to be checked out. We can’t diagnose from a sound recording or photo on here, so it’s always best to have them checked. Better to waste your time and he’s fine, than not take him. Piggies can deteriorate very fast.

Does he have a friend he lives with? Piggies aren’t made to live alone and need the constant company of another piggy. No amount of playing or interacting with a human can replace that relationship. Rescue dating is the best way to go.

Hi and welcome

All I can hear is some very faint and indistinct vocalisation in the middle? Unfortunately that is not enough to comment on.

If in doubt, please see a vet for a thorough check; bloating should be taken seriously as it can be caused by an underlying developing problem when pain/pressure is impacting on the gut and causing the bloating. it is not always necessarily food related. The gut is lying around all the other organs and filling pretty much the whole lower body, which is much larger than our own in comparison.

Keep in mind that piggies continue to eat when in mild to moderate pain; it is only very severe pain, illness or breathing problems that will impact on and kill the appetite very noticeably
If you suspect pain, it would also be good if you checked for other visible signs of pain, like being a bit hunched up, the hair standing up when eating etc.

I agree.

Thank you for your comments! I took him to a vet yesterday after all following my hunch. And I'm very happy that I did! He, in fact, had some issues with his right intestine. Also, we figured that he is having some sort of hair loss and it might be connected to a skin issue, so the vet took some samples from his skin and sent it to the lab, we'll get the results on Friday.

Probably due to this skin irritation he was biting himself and ate some of his fur, so it harmed the intestine :( But the vet said he'll be alright, considering he is still eating, drinking and defecating. And I believe he got better overnight, did like over 100 drops and still eats drinks and even runs around.

So, for now, I'm using a spray for his skin, and an oil-based medication to help his digestion. We'll learn more once the lab test out but I'm quite worried because it's the first time we are having an issue like this :( I'm even having a little hard time giving his medication because he gets irritated and I feel sad. I really hope we will be able to quickly heal him without further complications...

Teddy is a rescue piggy I saw online and totally fell in love! And getting him a friend is on top of my to-do list :D

What is the name of the medication and spray? Who recommended the medication and spray? Please stop using them. They don’t sound suitable for piggies, particularly the oil-based medicine. Piggies don’t need oil in their diet. I think people use probiotic to help the intestines/digestion/gut. Have a search on here for what people use.

Secondly, pulling on his hair won’t lead to problems with his intestine. They tend to do it because they’re in pain.

What did the vet say about the hair loss? And are they experienced with guinea pigs?

How’s Teddy doing? Please also add your location. And we’d love to see some pigtures.
