I'm pretty sure he's got mites, he been scratching and twitching like mad since saturday.

He's at the vet this morning anyway, I can't leave him like this.

Nicola

Just got back, vet couldn't see much evidence of mites.

He treated with a bit of spot on treatment, he didn't want to treat too aggressively because Bailey's an old fellow of 6yrs. We've just got to keep an eye out for the next few weeks.

Nicola

Is Spot on definitely safe for piggies? I've seen it in pet shops and wondered, given the concern about insecticidal shampoos.

awwww poor Bailey. I don't see why a dose of Ivomec wouldn't be ok?

Ton has had Ivomec every month or so and he's almost 7 yrs old.

Spot on is fine, but not as strong in my opinion

no, nothings changed, he's always had carefresh bedding and the same hay.

He seems a bit better now

Nicola

Good luck love, we hope Bailey will be ok real soon, are you sure nothings changed?
I know the weather seems to be playing havoc with piggies at the moment too :(
I've been told that the older they get they can be more and more prone to allergies etc...
Send him a big cuddle from us :-* :-* and healing wheeks

Invermectin will do. 3 shots within 30 days. just a little under the skin. It wont hurt your piggy..unless too big of a dose is given, but only about __ invermectin is given mixed with about ______ saline to give it some UMPH as it does in. You're cavy savy vet will know well. If the vet can't see the mites in the mite test, its most likely a fungus under the skin. Invermectin is the only thing that can cure that. Its probably NOT an allergy, gp's dont get allergic that often unless you're bedding is cedar, or you're bathing your piggy with something too harsh.

The amount of ivermectin given depends on the concentration, so I wouldn't use those little lines as guidelines! Skin scrapings are notorious for not showing mites when there are mites present - it is not an accurate indicator of whether or not a piggy has mites. They really are pointless.

The only safe spot on in the UK is the one made by Beaphar that contains ivermectin. Like Kelly says, the dose on the package means that what your piggy will get would actually be an underdose - we actually worked out the correct dose on Guinea Lynx. You would need 3 of the little tubes to treat a pig over 1kg which would mean their fur would be absolutely soaking!
