Can anyone help me, dittos eye has FINALLY started healing and looking more 'normal'. Well last night i got in from work and had a cuddle with him laid on my chest and he was making odd noises? He was like making a popping clicking noise when he breathed and sounded like snuffley as though he has a cold? Hes drinking more than usual but it was hot in sheffield yesterday so it couls just be me being paranoid about his fluid intake.. Hes eating loads as usual and seems happy enough, this morning he seems quiet but still ate his dandelion and pepper as though hed been starved for a month drool ... Ive read up about URI's could this be what I'm dealing with? I'm really worried as i go away on monday for a week and my parents are having ditto for me but il feel awful leaving him with them if hes ill? Can any one offer me any advice before i take him to the vets.. I'm realy woried 8...

Aw no, how awful

Here is my recent thread from when Scrummy had a URI, there is a video in the first post of the noise she was making, is it anything like this?

He needs to see the vet ASAP, URI's take over very quickly and sometimes beyond the point of help, however when caught early is easily treated and often curred very quickly with antibiotics.

xx

I'm going to take him to the vet monday as my local vet is closed now until monday and I'm working until 1pm today and it shuts at 12pm :-( omg i hope he will be ok I'm so worried, he seems really happy and theres no nasal discharge or anything or coughing? Can piggys get hay fever?

Ys i believe they can get hayfever, but if it is a URI it needs treatment ASAP, is there no other vet that is open? Without a proper diagnosis and medication, the problem could get much worse by Monday.

I no thats whats worrying me.. I will try and find another vet, trust ditto to become ill on a weekend :-( I'm hoping he picks up my boyfriend has just text saying hes sat munching apple and isnt making any weird noises but i know what i heard last night and it wasnt normal. Fingers crossed :-(

For informational purposes - a lot of pets at home shops have a vets surgery attached to them now called Companion Care - they are open on a saturday and sunday - so if you are stuck it's an option worth trying - a vets is better than no vets!

My boy had a URI once - it's better to get it looked at sooner rather than later - good luck :)

I had to take him to my vets emergency service this morning. £80 for a consultation what a rip off but atleast hes been seen now. He has been given an antibiotic injection and ive been told to keep an eye on him, he seema alot better to be honest his chest still sounda ruttley but he only had the jab today so wont work that fast. Hes currently sat munchin on a slice of cucumber so things look positive . Thankyou for showing you care

I'm pleased that Ditto has been seen and got some treatment, hopefully he will be feeling better soon! However, working in a vet surgery, and I think that saying that £80 is a rip off is somewhat offensive.

Sunday is an emergency service. You said that you noticed this problem on Friday after work. Your vets are likely to have been open Friday evening, and you've already said that they were open Saturday morning. The emergency service isn't there for convenience, it's there for emergencies and the price reflects this. I worked the emergency shift where I work today. I work it every Sunday and there's nothing more frustrating than people coming in with what has become an emergency, because they didn't bring it in during normal opening hours, while we're trying to deal with critically ill patients, answer the phones and see people that are coming in with more emergencies. There is no NHS for pets; owning a pet is a luxury and one that has to be paid for unfortunately.

Unfortunately as ive found out if a guinea pig is going to fall ill it will be at the most inconvenient of times - this is why it's always good to have a backup plan.

I know that the companion care vets do not charge an emergency fee to be seen on a saturday/sunday afternoon - their consultation fee is the same as it would be on a monday afternoon for example. Their 'out of hours/emergency' consultation fee may be different though - ive never used them personally but my mum did around 6 months ago when one of her cats became ill and had to be seen several times over a few weeks period.

As i said seeing ANY vets is better than NO vets when your pet is ill...

I totally agree with what Amanda has said though - pets are an expensive luxury - unfortunately vets fees come hand in hand with owning a pet - nothing we can do about it. I wouldn't put a price on one of my children if they became ill, nor would i make them wait to be seen by a doctor or taken to a hospital - if they become ill they are seen straight away regardless of how much walking i have to do combined with what it costs in taxi/bus/petrol fare.....

I am glad ditto has been seen and hope he feels better soon... pigs are such a worry at times!!

Just got back from the emergency vet with one of my own - think I jinxed myself earlier! mallethead

Oh no, Amanda! Who is it? Are they okay?

And back to the thread...
Piggies do seem to pick their times to be ill, never had to have an emergency appointment (touch wood) but the majority of appointments have ben just before the vets closes for normal surgery, either in the evening or on a Saturday!

Just made a thread!

Sorry didn't mean to thank your post above amanda :red

Funnily enough it was only 2 wks ago that i was at the vets on sunday afternoon - £60 lighter for a hay poke! What is it with sunday's? Supposed to be a day of rest - don't think i can recall a sunday where i actually relaxed and took it easy!
