Beans went to the vet the other day with a haematoma on his bum, and they gave him a mixed antibiotic and painkiller, said keep an eye on him as it would take about three weeks to go down.

Yesterday he was quite quiet, and i assumed he wasnt feeling great.

He was also ok this morning. Now he is floppy and very lethargic, and when you make him move, he is hopping, so i suspect he is in pain somewhere.

I have tried to make him drink and he just turns away or dribbles it out of his mouth, and i have tried giving him food, and he takes a few bites and gives up. I am sure he is dehydrated.

He is in a separate cage atm on a thick blanket in the fleecy-bag, but is flopped on his side.

I have left a message with the on- call vets to call me back. What else can i do?

Any word from the vets? They should have a real life person to answer the phone?

In the mean time, keep him warm, quiet and comfortable. Also keep him as hydrated as possible - if you can syringe feed small amounts of warm water, little and often, then that's great - you could even mix it with a tiny bit of ribena to make it more palatable, and also will get more Vit C into him.

Has he been eating/pooing normally until now?

Keep trying the vets, he needs to be seen asap. They need an actual person answering the phone. I cant believe they dont.

I really hope you can get him to feel better. Hugs.

Where do you live?

It may be that we can recommend a 24hr cavy savvy vet for you as it does sound like your poor little chappie is having a hard time and needs immediate vet attention

Sorry to hear he is so poorly

He has been. She gave him another antibiotic injection, and some painkillers in a syringe thing to give him daily.

He isnt too dehydrated, but he hasnt been eating properly. I might have to puree some veg but probably not tonight.

He is in a separate cage and is still collapsed on his side. I dont think he is going to make i through the night.

ive just spotted this thread...
how sad... poor little piggie...
well done you for having the sense to get him to the vets...
i really hope he gets through the night and gets better...
try and keep him hydrated... just a tiny bit of water down him is better than nothing...
have you got any critical care...?
give him lots of loves tonight...
finger crossed your special little man makes it....
xxxxxxx

What do you mean by critical care?

I have a syringe i can use to get some liquid down him, but i am worried he hasnt eaten anything in hours.

The other two seem to be squeaking as if they dont know what id going on.

its a powder... very similar to crushed up pelets... but has some goodies in it... bacteria and stuff for the gut...
you can get it from the vet...
if you havent got some... i'd probably crush some pellets with soem fresh guinea pig poops and mix with some water...and try and syringe that...
x

where are you based...?
if your close i could bring some critical care down to you....
x

I am in Norwich, so probably abit far frm you. I will try the poop and pellets in water, although he isnt ging to like it.

yeh... its about 3 hours away...!
lol...
a good way to do it...
is soak the pelets in hot water out of the kettle...
and when they have swollen up drain the water off... but dont put it down the sink... put it in a mug or something... and then mash the pellets till there a smooth paste... then do a poo pick...make sure they are fresh... a couple or three will surfice... crush them in the pellet mash mix... then add some of the drained off water untill you get a thickness that you can syringe feed him...
make sure its not hot when you give it him... room temp goes down the best...
good luck bab...

Make sure you start getting food down him asap. the longer you wait the worse it will be. I understand he might not like it much. But to make them better sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. If hes on his side perminatly you need to make sure you turn him over every couple of hours so he doesnt get pneumonia.

Good luck. I hope you can nurse him through the night. :(

I am in Norwich, so probably a bit far.

I have tried the poop and pellets approach, he did take some from the syringe but dribbled the rest.

I have tried mango juice in his water, but he doesnt get up to go to the water bottle. He just lies there.

Is it worth liquidising some veg for him? I am aware he isnt getting any vitamin C.

I will try and get some of the mix down him every half hour or so. He is still 'mobile' as in he can still use his back end, he is just choosing not to, so at least he isnt completely floppy and unable to move.

keep trying...its hard work when your piggie is like this...
i had 6 like this a couple of weeks ago...
try syringing water aswell... i put a tiny bit of sugar in the water of my lot when they were poorly they took it better from the syringe...
you want to be getting in him...(this was my aim when my lot were poorly)
5ml of critical care(crushed pellet mix )
and 5-10ml of liquid
and this is to be done every hour to 2 hours... through the night aswell...
wrap him up in a towel and tuck him under your arm... thats the way i found easiest...

and dont worrie to much about fresh food and veg at the moment...
the pellet mash is by far the most important....
you need to keep his gut moving...
and most pellets have added vit. C in them...
x

also what size syringe are you using...?
1ml is the best to use... and keep a dish close by with the water or foody-mix in it... so you can refil your syringe...
someone on here told me to cut the end of the syring off...just the sticky-outy bit... and they really take it better when its been sawn off... just make sure theres no sharp bits...
x

It is a 2.5ml syringe. I think if i cut the end off it would mean i couldnt get it in his mouth without him dribbling it out. .

I have added some sugar to the paste, and could add some juice-mixed water later on.

Still no poops or piddles.

ah no.... too big to cut the end off really... the 1ml syringes are best for that...
how much has he managed to eat and drink...?
x

Possibly about 5ml pellet mix/ paste about 20 mins ago, and nothing before that for quite some time.

He has had some oral painkillers.

I am going to gove him some more paste stuff now.

Hi Squiggly

Do you want to have a chat about Beans? It's easier on the phone. I know it's late but I'm still up! You are doing very well and I appreciate how difficult this is for you at the moment and the other forum members are doing grand in their advice......HUGS!

I'm also around all tomorrow...if you have to leave a message (please do.... wth your phone number) I'll ring you back

I'll PM you my contact details...

I can't add much except hang on in there, keep up the feeds, go slowly though, give him a chance to swallow in between, try not to syringe the water too quick & aim for the side of the mouth not right to the back of his throat.

Good luck, sending you lots & lots of good wishes x

I'm still a relatively inexperienced piggy slave so can't offer much advice, but other members are doing a brilliant job in trying to help. I just wanted to send all my healing vibes to Beans tonight :laluot_29::laluot_29::laluot_29:

You are doing a brilliant job with him, big hugs x

I hope your piggy starts improving soon, you're doing all you can, it's tough when they don't want to eat and it's the one thing they just can't not do. I had to take Thumper to the vet to be fed at one point when he wasn't well as it was just too frustrating and upsetting as I knew how important it was and he just would not eat. Best of luck xox

Best of luck in what you're doing, and keep it up. One think I'd add is - is he cold? (Feel his ears). If so, wrapping him in a towel will help.

Hugs, hope he pulls though..

I lost him during the night. I dont think he suffered, but i know he was in pain at the end.
I am so sorry i failed you little Beans, you went far too soon. I hope you are having fun with big CreamCake and little CoffeeCup in the sky.
