I've made a couple of hay bags for my piggys. It has got 2 holes at the bottom. Trouble is I have to remember to pull the hay part way out of holes, otherwise it backs up just above the holes & they can't reach it. What have I done wrong?

These are the OH work, I can't work the sewing machine, he thinks.
Used to have a folding hay rack, but got rid of it after that poor piggy died.
I can't stop them throwing it on the floor eiether.
Fix it Betsy.:D

Hi Tiamolly,

I recently added hay bags into my piggies cage. Although mine have a wider base, which probably does help to make sure there is more hay to the bottom. I’ve found that regardless of pulling hay through, the piggies don’t seem to continue to pull it out. Instead they dig their noses right into the bags and push it all around, probably trying to sniff out the best bits! So this just pushes the hay up, down and all around inside the bags, leaving none hanging out. I have to keep pulling it through and yet they do the same time and again. I think it’s just something piggies like to do.

I’ve now tried sprinkling hay on top of their tunnels which they think is a great game to get it. The only trouble is that it makes a mess of the fleece. I still fill and pull through the hay in the hay bags each day, it’s more of a back up option.

Hope that helps,
Best wishes,
Jo

Hi, I will probably make some with a panel in it or sprinkle it like yours. I thought of a wooden one on the floor, but that will take up too much space & I worry my poor babies might catch there heads,Thanks a lot, for your help Jo

Aww shame as they look good :)

Is it any good using an old heavy duty/thicker carrier bag, cutting the bottom open & tucking it inside the top (to form a temporary lining) that way the hay won't stick to the material at the top, making it fall with gravity easier.
Maybe attach the handles to/over your clips?
Also the piggies can't chew the plastic if it's not down low enough :)
Any good? Xx

That's a good idea too. I've got to go round all the supermarkets now, to find, a nice picture that my piggies like.

You might want to consider getting timothy hay, it's generally shorter, softer and will move down the bag easier. Piggies also adore it. Looks like you've done a great job to me though!
