Hello can someone help me I feel so helpless, not long after Jaffa got the green light to live with the girls I noticed one of the guinea pigs poo as got a lot smaller and it was hard to pin point who’s it was, so I’ve noticed Jaffa reacting tiredly towards treats so I’ve reconnected the camera and noticed he isn’t eating so last night I checked him his tooth has fractured, I did some guinea pig smoothie for him until this morning got him to the vets and they checked him over he has lost weight, and his moles I think at the back are getting bigger so they have given me critical care sachets, metacam and something for his organs, I’ve been syringe feeding him but he’s having half of 5ml and most of that all over me and him, he is moving a tiny bit, his breathing is rapid and he just seems so tired and I’m worried because it’s Saturday and no vets are open on a Sunday and he’s in vets again on Monday, ive separated from the girls, honestly the only way I can explain his movements is he’s like a rag doll where before he’d either hide, leg it or restrain and he keeps pointing his head down too... I’m freaking out 😭😔🤞🏼

are you able to ring an emergency vet,if you ring your normal vets,it will give you the number for the out of hours vet.I'm sorry your piggie is poorly, but if you think your piggie is getting worse i would be looking to go to the vets urgently.weight daily to see wether the syringe feed is enough ,to maintain your piggies weight.good luck, please inform the gpf how you get on:)

Please contact an emergency vet; you can either google for round the clock emergency vet services in your area (especially in urban areas) or listen to the message on your regular vet's answer phone.

I am very sorry! HUGS!

Keep your boy as calm, comfy and warm (but not hot).

Fingers crossed for Jaffa and hugs to you, it’s horrible, these emergencies always happen at the weekend x
Not so bad 🙄 if it was the week I wouldn’t be as worried but it’s Sunday tomorrow and I feel trapped and helpless, I’ve brought him in my living room where I watch tv, he’s in his bed with a self warming blanket and I’ve put Clio in with him for comfort, the other 2 are boisterous x

My guinea pig, Tiberius, in his final stage of passing on was so lethargic and had no will to live that he basically just lay on his side all day and night. His poops did become small at first and then became very watery. His breathing was shallow and he began choking up green food.
I am so sorry to here that Jaffa is not doing well. It is possible he might just be sick. :) My two lovely girl piggies send their heartfelt sympathies along with mine.

It’s awful when they’re poorly because doesn’t matter what it is wether it’s a cold or god knows but it’s fatal for them and not just that they’re not very popular where I am I remember when I took Clio vets she was only 4 months old for suspected ring worm and they said they have never had a guinea pig in I was so shocked like every and any animal needs a vet doesn’t matter how big or small wether you love the bones of them or if you never met them before they have just as much rights as we do that’s the way I see it... breaks my heart I hope and pray for your baby, hope your okay too 💞😔

Sending strength, I can only echo the out of hours vets or even some of the vets inside pets at home operate on a Sunday too. I ended up at the emergency vet at 8pm last sunday but hopefully that quick action has saved my Lily's eye from needing removing

If he doesn’t improve I’ll be taking him to pets at home, since feeding him critical care sachets his poop is stringy and sticky like a bogey, should I be concerned?

It means that he has pretty much not eaten or drunk anything in the last 24 hours. Please keep syringe feeding and offering lukewarm water every 1-2 hours round the clock to see whether you can keep him going/get him going again; it is tough but if you want to be in with a chance of saving him then you won't be able to go to bed tonight.

Aim for 40-60 ml in 24 hours if you want to get your boy through this - a healthy guinea pig in its is eating the equivalent of about 120 ml in a day. It is at least a good sign that the poos are still coming. that means that the guts haven't stopped yet and you are still within a change. The stringiness means no drinking (as well as any mucus around the poos), the small size no eating. Poo output is running 1-2 days behind the input.

Please do not feed if your piggy is to weak to swallow or chew or is struggling far in excess of its weak state. In either case, it is beyond help. Never squirt a syringe full of food into a piggy's mouth. They can take 0.1-0.5 ml in one go depending on size and fitness. You have to wait until that has gone down before you can give more. it is not a quick process with a severely ill piggy. Please read the guides.

PS: I have done this last weekend for three days round the clock for a piggy of mine with GI stasis (the guts stopped working). She is thankfully still here.

Thank you, I have syringe feed him every 2 hours but how many mls should he have each time? And I’ve been giving him sterilised water, can I ask the difference it makes with lukewarm water? And how many mls should he have each time?

Please read the complete syringe feeding guide that Wiebke has linked to above. I believe it contains guidance on how much food and how often it should be given.

How is Jaffa this morning? Did he make it through the night? My Vets4Pets are excellent with guinea pigs so if you have one near you phone them up as soon as they open at 10am and you will see a vet today.

So sorry everyone I’ve been in a panic Jaffa passed away in my arms at 3am and I’ve been ringing every vets near me, I’m going to try get him cremated today but it’s looking like I’ll have wait till tomorrow, thank you for all your advice 💞

That’s where I’ve been taking him, I’ve been messaging them this morning they gave me a 0161 number because they wasn’t open yet, I’ll check what time there open now hopefully I can get him sorted there and today

Sorry to hear that.
I would recommend putting Jaffa in a plastic sealable box and put him in the freezer if you wish to have him cremated until you have arranged the appointment.

Oh love bless you. I hope you’ve got someone there to give you some support? You gave Jaffa a happy life and now he’s at peace.
Big hugs!

I'm so sorry for your loss. If you're having him cremated at a vet make sure you specify exactly what you want (if you want his ashes back for example) otherwise they can mass cremate them.
Sending you virtual hugs, I'm sorry you lost him, he was beautiful.
