I think my (nearly 1.5yearold) piggy is pregnant!

She is around late 1yearold early 2. She was with him for around 6 months I don't understand why there aren't any babies either! :-) I got him from a pet shop when he was about 3wks old. So don't think he has been castrated . He's definitely a boar as he shared his cage with another male for 4 years and no babies and he also definitely has a male part lol

Hmm... slightly odd! Any chance she could have been spayed by the rescue centre?

If she IS pregnant, she's going to need a C-section, so it would be a good idea once you know for sure, to liaise with a good guinea pig vet. Now would be the time to start looking around and planning, just incase!

Thanks for advise I'm hoping she isn't pregnant since he hasn't managed to get her pregnant in 6 months, she doesn't look any fatter than usual but I guess it's early days. :-):{

As Cinders is an older sow there is a higher probability that she will have complications during the birth but not necessarily. Also, as there is very little history with her she may well have had babies before she went into rescue which will reduce the risk. Not every pregnancy in older girls results in a C section, even for first timers. As long as you have a vet who is competent and you act swiftly should the need arise then the outcome will be as good as you can make it.

As for there being no babies previously, she or Patches may have low fertility. Fingers crossed she is not expecting and all your worry is for nothing.

What made you think she might be pregnant in the first place? Sorry if you already said and I missed it!

I think it unlikely that she is since she has had a few seasons with him. But this was before I even new she was female but now I no I'm just preparing myself for possible outcomes. I should of checked before I even put them together but I just never questioned the centres judgement. I haven't seen eny signs that she is pregnant yet.

There is a very small chance your male could be infertile. As I understand it, it would be a lifelong anatomical thing not something brought on with age. At the same time your female could have skipped a number of cycles whilst living with the male resulting in no pregnancy.

Back in the day when I first had guinea pigs, I had a similar situation happen. Thought I had 3 females, turned out 2 females and 1 male. Only one of the females was pregnant and gave birth to 2 healthy babies. Therefore the male was definitely fertile, they were all together nearing 3 months before we realised there was a problem and separated, so again there was plenty of time for both females to become pregnant but like I say one of them didn't. Never really got an explanation for it and thankfully there were no issues with the sow that didn't become pregnant. I probably should have considered myself lucky!

I'd definitely get in touch with a vet to be on the safe side, if you guinea pig is pregnant she will start showing sooner or later and you probably want to have someone with good expertise lined up just incase. If she doesn't start showing and you can't eventually feel any babies moving or kicking then I'd say it was a close escape. It will also be a good opportunity to get the piggy checked over by a vet again just incase there is anything evidently wrong with her.
