Hi everyone,

Within the past week, my piggy Sugar has lost about 300g...we found blood on her bedding and took her to the vet a couple of times. she is about 4-5 yrs old and i think she's nearing the end of her life. she won't eat or drink anything and we have tried to syringe feed her some critical care food but she refuses.. i don't want her to die, what can i do to make her feel better?

Thank you

I’m so sorry I can’t help you... My only suggestion is to spend as much time as possible with her, I know what it’s like to lose a beloved piggy, I lost my Smudge so suddenly, I can’t imagine what it would be like to know you're losing them, she may still have a few good years left in her though. If you think she is suffering and in a lot of pain please consider euthanasia it might be the best choice, I had to do it with my rabbit Bella when she had E. Cuniculi at 9 months old 😞

All my thoughts are with you and your piggy...

Thank you for your reply. A few years back, my other piggy Coffee died unexpectedly and she only lived for a few months. it was really hard on me then, I can't imagine how I'm gonna feel once sugar dies...she doesn't seem to be in pain, but she is barely moving. she's huddled in the corner of her cage and she doesn't purr when i pet her anymore :(

i would advise this is an out of hours emergency for a vet,if you stand of saving your piggie.I'm sorry for your dilemma.. ..she maybe shutting down,if your piggie is not accepting any food.x

Please rush her to an emergency vet.

Try and force feed her food to keep her tummy going. Maybe give her her favourite piece of veg or whatever pleasure food she enjoys. I've had one or two piggies who refuse to eat critical care light up a little when I offer them one. It doesn't stop them not eating overall but in that moment it can keep the tummy going a bit longer.
Try and keep her warm if you can and keep an eye on her but mostly get her to a vet.

If you have other guinea pigs, collect their healthy poo and make it into a guinea pig mush with a little warm water like critical care to hopefully restore her gut flora a little. It's like a poop soup, kind of gross but can really help.

Keep us updated. x

firstly, why is she bleeding and where from? This is an emergency vet visit. And are you using a guinea pig experienced vet ?

i think the blood is coming from her urine..her poop was fine (but she hasn't pooped in a couple of days). The vets in my area specialise in cats and dogs, and when i took her, the the vet was unsure of many things...

A quick update:

I came home and not too much has happened..she sniffed her food and water but didn't consume any. i watched her and she laid down, her eyes slowly closing. I can't tell if she's about to fall asleep or die :( I really don't know what to do and I don't have many options as of now. I'm so scared and I'm afraid that the next time i walk by her cage, she'll be gone...

@sugarthepiggy

You have two options:
1) Find another vet who know about guinea pigs and take her there immediately

2) Take her back to the vet you saw and have her euthanised. It sounds like she is dying especially if she hasn't eaten for so long. The kindest thing you can do is help her over the Rainbow Bridge to prevent any suffering.

Does she make sounds of pain as shes peeing? Is it possible she has Cystitis? I still think you need to get her to a guinea pig savvy vet.

I had a guinea pig suffer form this and he was very much the same way. Try her on cranberry juice in a syringe and see how it helps.

I'm tagging @helen105281 as she may have better advice as she was with the vet who worked on my guinea pig who had this problem.

I agree, she needs to see a vet who is knowledgeable with guinea pigs ASAP.
