Hi and happy weekend,

Last night, around 4-5 hours after veg I noticed Rosie’s tummy, although soft, was looking REALLY big. She was still active, eating and drinking, but when she went to sleep she was facing away and slept in a ball. Usually she stretches out.

It was midnight and I immediately panicked, wanted to go in for an emergency, but then I saw her pass some poop and decided to keep a close eye on her. I set up a space for her on the second floor so I could be sure she was pooping and it wasn’t her sister. Woke up every 1 hour to check on her.

At some point she got better. She stretched out when sleeping and purred.

In the morning she was 100% back to normal.

Can a bloat happen this way? I did give her more cucumber that evening because I wanted to up her water intake.

Her poop looks normal, should I still hold off veg for a few days?

Sending Rosie lots of love and hugs to you. I hope you can get some rest today after getting up so much in the night.
Sorry I can't answer your questions but wanted to offer support.

I think it can't do any harm to shift Rosie's diet more towards hay for a day or two. I'm not an expert though. I hope things continue to be stable 🙏

Back in 2013 I was staying with my parents with my then guinea pigs. It was warm day so they spent the day on the grass. That evening my Eliza looked a bit bloated and uncomfortable. Like with you, I kept a close eye on her. There was no change the following morning so I managed to get her a vet appointment at a local vets. The vet said she had mild bloat and gave her an injection of gut stimulant and told me to keep her off veg for the next day or two. She was back to her usual self an hour later and we travelled home with the piggies. So yes, I think bloat can happen that way

I’m glad Rosie is ok and I hope you’ve managed to get some rest

It will do no harm to feed her a hay / pellet only diet for the next day or two if you’re concerned x

Thank you all! I made the decision to definitely keep her off veg today and tomorrow we’ll see. Poor thing is very upset by this!

She is an older girl and perhaps her digestive system is more delicate now. Really hope this doesn’t happen again!
