Hi everybody, nice to meet you all here!

I've noticed that the last two days something's wrong with Sergio's right eye... It's watery, I can actually see some kind of tears coming out of it and, I'm not sure, but I think it's a bit swollen...:( Nothing has changed as far as eating and drinking are concerned, he eats his food and drinks his water as he usually does... But he does look a bit moody... He sleeps more than he used to, he's very quiet and he's even stopped gnawing on his cage bars, his favourite hobby...
The problem is that in Greece where I live, guinea pigs are not very popular, so most vets don't know a lot about them and I'm afraid they'll not be able to help him... :... Has anything similar ever happened to your piggies? Is there any way I can help him? Please, tell me it's something not very serious... It's the first time something is wrong with him and I'm so so so worried about him! :...
Thanks in advance!

P.S. He is 2,5 years old, if this helps at all...

Do you have a picture? It is difficult to tell you what it could be as there are a number of problems piggies can have with their eyes.

Thanks for the link! I've taken a picture of his eye but looking at it you can't really tell that there's something wrong, it looks normal there, it's not like it's injured and it doesn't look like anything I saw in the link you sent me...
However, I am taking him to a vet tomorrow morning, I have no other option, I hope he'll find out what's wrong with him... :(

Most probably, he has something stuck under his lid (can be even a bit of soft hay or a blade of grass - I had a piggy who did that to me twice).

Please have your piggy seen by a vet and treated with eye drops/gel if there are any injuries to the surface of the eye (corneal ulcers). Thankfully, eye injuries can be treated well and they heal quickly. There is not too much your vet could do wrong!

Thanks a lot! Of course I am taking him to a vet, it's the only way for him to get well soon! One last thing I want to ask: Given that he has something stuck under his lid, could this affect his mood as well? Because as I told you he's been very moody these days and sleeping a lot...
(sorry for my not-so-good English! I hope you can understand me!)

Piggies can get grumpy when they're not feeling great. My pig would bite me when he was feeling moody.

Hope your pig is better soon!

Thank you all so much!
I'm counting down the hours for our visit to the vet...
The worst of all is that I just noticed some important loss of weight... Truth is that I hadn't weighed him for like 2 months or so.. He's been eating a lot and everything I gave him.. I even thought that he was getting fatter and fatter but his fur must have tricked me.. He's lost like 150 grammars since the last time I weighed him 2 months ago, he's 830 gr. right now... Oh my God, I feel so guilty.. But he looked perfectly fine so far.. only the last 2 days did he become so moody and his eye got bad... Even now he eats and drinks as he always did...
Please keep your fingers crossed for my little boy... and let's hope it's not as serious as it looks...

Sorry for bringing this up once more, but I really need someone to calm me down...
After visiting the vet and being treated with eye drops and vitamins for 4 days now, Sergio looks much better... His eye looks better, he's not moody any more, he eats a lot and he's even gained 40-50gr in 4 days!
Considering all these, I'm thinking that it might not be a tumor after all... I think that if it really was a tumor, he would be deteriorating instead of getting better..
I think that all of you are much more experienced with guinea pigs than I am so... What is your opinion? Thanks again so much :)

Hello

Hay pokes or scratches to the eye are quite common and clear up with treatment quickly. From your posts I would say that this is a simple eye problem and your vet has given the correct treatment. Tumours or abscesses in/behind the eye are not common at all - out of 800 rescue pigs I have had one with an abscess behind the eye, anitbiotics saved the pig and his eye.

If his eye problem was more serious than a scratch on the surface then the treatment from the vet would not have worked so quickly and the eye would be getting worse. You are doing a great job of looking after your piggies, and your vet has given you the right treatment. I hope this has helped.

Thank you so much! I talked with the vet today and he said that since Sergio is getting better I should keep on with the same treatment.. But what if he has an infection behind his eye? Do you think that I should give him antibiotics just in case? The vet said no, but although his eye is less swollen than before it is still bulging out compared to his healthy eye..

Sergio has started losing weight again...almost 40gr. in 2 days... Is this normal? He's been gaining weight for some days now since we started the treatment but I weigh him every day (sometimes twice a day) and I noticed weight loss during the last two days... He was getting so much better with the treatment.. Why is he losing weight again? :(

I'm so sorry for bringing this up once more but I am so worried about my little boy and I really need your help and advice.

Although Sergio was a lot better for about 3 days after we started the treatment he seems to be worse for a couple of days now... He's stopped gaining weight (he's even lost about 30gr.) and he's being moody again. Even his eye seems to be bulging out again even though it looked much better during the first days he was getting his treatment.

Should I give him antibiotics and stop giving him Dispersadron? If yes, what kind of antibiotics should I give him? Should I take him back to the vet? Or take him to another vet and get a second opinion?

I am so confused, so worried and I can't stop thinking about it... I feel helpless and I hate seeing him like this without being able to help him.. :(

Please help me :...

Hi

I would take him back to the vet - most eye infections would clear up with the medication you've already had - the next step would likely be anitbiotics - as you live in Greece it's hard to know which ones are available to you.

It would be foolish of me to recommend any type of treatment as I'm not a vet, have not seen your piggy and don't know the medications available to you.

Wishing your piggy a speedy recovery.

Today is the big day for my little Sergio...

I took him to another vet a couple of weeks ago and she said that Sergio doesn't have a tumor, but has serious dental problems (overgrown molars), which also caused a bad abscess behind his eye (he'll probably lose it..).

After two weeks of treatment with antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, painkillers and syringe-feeding, in 3 hours he'll have both his teeth and his eye operated under GA...

Although he looks fine, happy and well the last days, I know that it's the medication that keeps him going and I'm so worried about him being under GA... He's only 780gr. right now, I just hope and pray that he'll wake up and return home with me tonight, safe and sound!

The "funny" thing is that he looks very anxious the last couple of hours..as if he knows what is going to happen to him... He won't let me touch him and every time I do, he runs away from me :(

Please keep your fingers crossed for him! :0

aww fingers crossed and paws for sergio, what a crappy few weeks eh?

Really hope it goes to plan and he improves x

Everything went fine! His teeth were trimmed and his eye is shut right now with stitches, because this way he's got a good change of not losing it! He woke up 5 minutes after the operetion was over and now he's trying to walk and eat again! :)

That's great news - he may need a bit of help with his food for a few days until he gets used to the feel of his teeth. So glad he came through it all so well.

Good on you for following it up !
Because of your love for little Sergio you've found another vet who's treated him :) I'm so sorry he's had to go thru so much.
We all are hoping he will be ok lots of girlies kisses from Velvet and Onyx to help him xoxoxoxoxoxo

I agree with Suzy he will need help with food, grate up some of his food and cut it up smaller so he's able to eat.

Did the vets give you pain killers for Sergio too?

Hi,

I'm so glad he made it thru the surgery fine! Yay! How is he doing today? How is he eating? Hope everything is going well. :))

glad he is doing well after surgery. Sorry you've had such a time with him but it sounds like your vet has done a good job. Keep a close eye on him. I take it you have antibiotics and painrelief for him? X

Thank you all so much!

Today is the 2nd day after surgery and he looks fine! He's on Baytril and Metacam and we also give him Florentero as an "antidote" for the antibiotics. Thankfully he doesn't scratch his eye very much and the stitches are intact so far! The vet said that if he manages to keep the stiches for at least five days, his eye will have a very good chance of healing. We're still syringe-feeding him but last night he chewed on some cucumber and I think that he actually ate some of it, so I thing that this is a big achievement considering that it was the first day after the operation! However, he is still not able to eat hay or parsley, probably because he hasn't learnt how to use his new, smaller teeth yet!

The only thing that worries me a bit is that he won't let us touch him or stroke him like he used to. He is probably still stressed because of the operation I guess!
