I have two 6 month old brothers - I'm so delighted with my first piggies that i would REAALLLLLY like to get more eventually - what should i do for the best :

1 - set up a new house with females ( therefore i can get as many as i like because they wont be as territorial as the boys ?)
2 - get a *sterlised*female (or two ) for the brothers as company.

Its just that i have seen some owners with up to 10 ladies and apart frpm the odd squabble they all live togther happily - i love that! I believe i am correct that boys can be a lot harder to intergrate because they compete for space / Territory / women etc....therefore the brothers I have now are fine so dont rock the boat by adding any more boys - unless its a female - BUT wouldnt that make them squabble over her so maybe i woould be better of starting a 'new' family of girls...

What should i do ..I would LOVE to rescue more and i have the space and means to help some unfortunate piggies. Any advice welcomed

thankyou! xxxkerry

It is not impossible to have two boys and a girl, but it is very difficult. If you can, I would get another cage for the girls, and try your best to not even have them in sight or smell of each other. They may not fight, but you don't wanna take the chance as once they begin to really fight and not just squabble, it can be quite difficult to re-bond them.

If you really do have plenty of space, then in your position what I personally would do is get another pair of boars, keeping them in a separate cage from the first pair. There always seem to be so many more boars than sows waiting in rescues and, as you have already discovered, boars make very affectionate and cuddly pets.
I would go for an established adult pair - with youngsters there is always the possibility that they may fall out as they grow up, but if you get an adult pair this is much less likely to happen.

We already had a bonded pair of boars and have recently adopted a second pair - see my thread 'Tom and Jerry'.

;D ;D ;D I told you they were addictive.

I'd go for girls, so you can add to them, but have them away from the boys. I recently moved my girls down to the shed and Hugo and Hurley caught a whiff of them and started squabbling so I immediately moved them to the other side of the shed and they were fine (thankfully). They don't seem upset by the presence of boars though, so you could go for more boars but kept seperately.

girls are a lot more easier to add to I have 17 girls in my herd all running free in a hugh run in a shed, they get laong wonderfully, as already said boys ont he whole keepa way from girls although I do have 2 boys in my girls shed in a hugh metel cage type run as long as they can see them they are both perfectly happy,

Thanks everyone for the great advice - I'm happy to have boars OR sows so i will leave it too fate to decide for me - I'm a great believer in 'putting it out to the universe' and seeing what comes back :D

CHEERS! :D Kerryxx

NEVER, have 2 boys with any amount of girls. the dominant male (oldest) will fight to the death with the younger male
over his ladies.
Georgy and Smidge used to get on well before females were introduced, now its going to be two seperate families. :(
if i was you, i'd leave the males together and get 2 females to live together.
Or.
I'd put each male with a female of its own, in its own lil house :)

depending where you are , drop in to youre local rescue , theres always lots boars looking for home , and I'm sure would apperciate some one keen to take on boars & if its a good rescue they will go that extra mile & get you a nice pair or 3 some of boys , i wouldnt suggest trying more complicated male groups till you have more exp , but yes its possible i have a group's of 6 , 4 3 & 2 .
good luck & its wonderfull that you want to go to a rescue, pity youre not near cavykind or starshine they have some lovely boars looking for a home, & please post your updates so we can see what happens :)

I love seeing them in packs - like they would live in the wild - it is definatly more enriching for them and they are happier in groups... i will contact the local pet home and ask if they have any boar 'sets'...the only trouble with germany is its REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALY hard to go through the adoption process - last time we visited i said we wanted to home a rabbit indoows - but i was told to come back in 2 months as it was the 'wrong time of year ' (!? ) they didnt seem worried at all about whether i had a cahe etc - just right off NO. Wierd - anyway - they are only doing their job so its cool but i would love to rehome form them if i can because its the best way.

I will defff let you know what happens. :)

What is neutering like where you live? You could neuter each boy then have each with their own hareem, about 5 or 6 would be the norm in the wild :)
