today I went to p@h at to buy some food for the pigs, I dont get food from there often usually online but ran out. now I have not really had a problem with this store before the animals always seemed fine until TODAY! they obviously had a "fresh batch" of guinea pigs simple because there were loads, I was just watching them until one caught my eye about his eye, it was gunky and half closed the other was fine, I went to sales assistant and asked are you in charge of the guinea pigs? erghhhh yes why? firstly how rude of an answer to say to a customer, I told her that one of the guinea pigs looks like hes got an eye infection. oh ok Ill get someone now. so I waited by the hutch until someone came heard from the other assistant saying the customer is saying one of the pigs has an eye infection, she came over I pointed out which one, when she finally caught him she had a quick look rubbed his gunky eye and took him to the back. a couple of minutes later I saw another staff member holding him saying aww youve only got sleep in your eye, and she was told just put him back into the group. so after they left I went to see him again the gunk was cleaned but his eye still looked half closed. even if they had treated or even if I was wrong about it being an infection he should have been separated for a while it looked healed it made my blood boil, as soon as I left I said the assistant on the till just to let you know I have taken note of all the "animal expert staff" names who looked at that guinea pig including yourself and you will be reported in my complaint letter to your head branch about how well you look after the animals in this store.

This is terrible. My store in Chelmsford has 3 pigs in a pen. I was really annoyed as they're normally bought in pairs so what happens to the one that's left? She'd have to be bonded to another pig and left on her own for a while. Made me really sad :(

:( that's why I don't go in pet shops upsets me to much poor thing glad you said something though :) let's hope he gets better

update - complaints email sent lets see what they have to say about their expert staff now

You can also complain about trading standards to the local council. However, I would to please ask you not to name shops on this forum.

I would do as suggested, complain to trading standard and contact your local council- they issue the licenses.

Also, if you want to name and shame, there's nothing more effective than facebook, tag them in a ranty status update this will link them and everyone on their page and your page willl see it and be aware ;)

I understand how you feel, I'm going to have to avoid pet shops because I get worked up if I see something I dont like.
Saying that I will continue to pop into Prestwood because I've been assured things are being put right and i will definately report if things slip back. When I went In Saturday there wasn't any Piggys at all but I saw a man walking out with a box full of babies-could have been a breeder? But why was he leaving I don't know-hopefully they decided not to take them for whatever reason.

I've never had a problem with that particular one or the one in Oldham so it's a shame.

Let's hope that your letter does the trick and the assistant gets a talking too!

I've been quite lucky with the mentioned shop by me.

I was looking at the piggies once and this family were choosing which ones they wanted. The young boy chose one and the small animal specialist checked it over but because he had a scab on his lip he couldn't be bought until he had been fully checked over. Which I thought was quite good.

My little Troy de Guinea is from Pets at home. He was in the adoption centre as he had to be separated as the other piggies bullied him because of his neurological disability. They gave me lots on information and information about his previous vet checks. More than helpful!

I went into today though and both the Sow and Boar cages were full of piglets!

There is one shop near me. I will never ever set foot into that shop again. Every time i have shopped there i have experienced nothing but problems! Always over charging me!

I went there a few weeks back as they had a sale on their ZooZone cages and Troy loves his cage so i thought about getting him a new one. Well i went to the shop and we saw the piglets.. there was this little black and tan one and was the scruffiest thing i have ever seen.. So we bought a new cage and this new piggy (Troy didn't get his cage..treats instead!)! We named him Peppa. Got him home, but him in the cage to leave him settle. Had a look a few hours later and looked SO sad. Even Troy chirping at him through the other cage wasnt soothing him.. So off we went back to the shop to go and get his litter mate. Another black and tan so we have twins! We named him Buddy.

They also had another 8 piglets there. Got Buddy home put him in the cage and i checked on little Peppa. He was laying their lifeless and his eyes firmly shut. I quickly got him out and knew something was wrong. I called the shop and they said to take him to the vets. The Vet was so mad that a pet shop sold him to me in such a way! Conjunctivitis! The vet prescribed eye drops for both pigs as Buddy was definitely going to get it.

I went back to the shop to talk to head of small animals and he agreed to pay for the vets bill via cheque. We also noticed all the piglets from this morning had gone and the lady behind the pets counter said they had all been sold.. Within a space of 2 hours on a incredibly stormy sunday! Most unhelpful company ever experienced!

I had to treat them both for about 2 weeks, they are both fighting fit now :) -c
