I was passing the cage on my way to the kitchen and I heard squeaking. So I just stopped to check they were OK, you see! rolleyes

and then I carried on to lie down exactly where I planned to have a little snooze......

I am so happy to hear how well he is doing. He looks so well. You are doing a wonderful job. :)

actually he is really naughty with them and has even tried to climb into their home! :x but with some training and patience he is improving but he can't be left alone near them.

for those who don't know, I rescued this beautiful soul from the streets, starving, filthy and terrified being attacked by a pack of dogs. A casualty of the crisis here in Greece, can't afford your pet or don't want it anymore, drive it somewhere and dump it!
 
Oh thats awful, what a we soul. Youve done wonderful with him, his coats lovely and shiny and he looks very loved.
Its funny my border terrier, meant for hunting small animals, submits to the pigs, she gave me a paw the ohter night thinking I would let her have a poo. Shes nuts. But yet my cross breed heinz57 dog would happily devour the piggies without a thought when * werent looking. It took a long while to train her as tasty as they looked and sound......they were NOT an appitiser lol.

I did some reading on the internet about how to try and get him to not constantly want to 'hunt' the piggles. One suggestion was to let him meet them. So I got one out on my lap, with my husband on standby, and brought Chocco slowly to meet the little one. I honestly believe that if my husband had not been there then things would not have had a good result. Needless to say not all advice you read on the internet is necessarily the best way to do things!
 
actually anyone with any advice on this subject? would be greatly appreciated!

right now i just watch and control him, constantly calling him away, if i go out, he has to be out, if i go upstairs, he has to come, I can't trust him for even 1 second alone. I wonder what Cesar Milan would do?
 
i actually think what you did was good, i know my two dogs used to go crackers about the little things running about in the cage, but when they met them, after a few times they lost interest, now they just want the poops!

We are going through it with the hamster now rolleyes

oh, maybe I should continue with this then, let him meet them a few more times and hopefully he'll get bored of them?

:)) now the hammy must be more interesting, whizzing around on its wheel...
 
Yeah I'm afraid it persistance, it took a good 6months to get her used to them. At first I just did the same as you and we made her lie down while someone held Theo. When she was calmer she was allowed a sniff. I did this for weeks and it first she would sit and watch him, mouth drewling for hours, then one day she cracked and got bored. Then I held her my the collar and let Theo run about the floor, she didnt like this at all, but everytime her attitude changed and she got very hunt like, we very assertively said No and forced her into a submissive position, theres a few, google them, I suppose it depends ont he size of the dog and with a deep harsh voice said NO. Eventually she got the Gist. We also let her watch them in their cage for hours.
But you have to let them meet and teach them they cant hurt them. As although Meg knows now Theos not a snack, when a new guinea pig arrives she doesnt think the rule applies to them.
But the hard works worth it, Theo can run about the floor and she wont go for him now, I still wouldnt leave them alone with him running and squeeking, but when were there shes fine.
 
yes i say keep introducing them to him, our dog is a spaniel, and went nuts when we first got piggies, now i can sit with them on my lap. she comes over for a look , i say"be good" she looks at me, and really behaves. I would nt leave her in the room with them though,as they run backwards and forwards across the cage, that is just too tempting for her ! its the running that excites them x
 
SO cute! My cat runs away from the piggies, looks like Chocco wants to have a little investigate of their house.
 
What a gorgeous dog!

I have two border collies one of them is completely disinterested in the pigs the other sees jumping pork chops. The pigs get excited on a morning and run and jump around their cage and if no one is downstairs you can hear him crying at them. When we're getting ready to go somewhere he looks at you and then back at the pigs constantly you can see so clearly on his face "once they've left I'm going to eat them!"

When I have them out and I'm holding them he walks into the room see's them out and walks back out again. He's a strange dog at the best of times.

Your dog is gorgeous! I don't have any specific advice relating to dogs, but I've taught my cat to accept the piglets-mainly by making out that it isn't a big deal, and letting him sniff them etc. He just seems to see them as his friends now, I don't even bother shutting the cage door. He'll casually jump in, sleep next to them for a couple of hours (they don't seem to care, either! Ed in particular always sniffs his nose to greet him!), and then jump out when he is ready. By making the piglets something that he is not allowed near, you make it more exciting for him! Obviously be careful and sensible, but I def agree with Karina.
 
thanks for the advice everbody, so i'm trying a different approach based on everyones comments here....

the last 2 days I have let him sit as long as he wants watching the piggles. Only reprimanding him when he tries to climb up. He has sat, without moving a muscle, for hours and hours on end! mallethead

But last night, a tiny breakthrough! He actually left them to come and play with us in the lounge for about an hour before going back to his viewing. rolleyes.

so i'm hoping he'll get bored, the piggles are certainly bored of him and now just totally ignore him! :))
 
I have two dogs, my basset hound and my little jack russell. Both dogs occasionally 'watch' the piggies playing but so far have never tried to 'touch' them. I wouldn't let the piggies out of their cage/ run anywhere near the dogs though, it's a natural instinct for the dogs to make a grab for it! Most of the time, to be honest, the dogs are uninterested in the piggies, they tend to ignore them unless one makes a wheeking noise when they are walking past. I've been very lucky, as both dogs are hunting breeds. :)

I suppose my animals just get on with living in the 'zoo' I call home, there are so many different ones they just aren't bothered! :))
 
Success ......well done on your patience. Keep going......a few months of this everyday and you'll be surprised. And you'll be so much more relaxed about the house, it will be worth it.

Have you thought of emailing him? He did a show in OZ not long ago my friend who i go to the footy with went and said he was great!

I know i would NOT trust our Bella near my girls either :{ she too is a border collie!
We find if she's focused on something there's no blurry way you can get her to respond...... we are failures in her upbring this way !

I think you're doing a wonderful and brilliant job with Chocco x)
 
He is looking great, well done. That extra 5 kilos will come soon enough, its a slow but rewarding process building a dog up. As with regards to the training you could try squirting water from a water gun at him when you see him doing something naughty, this won't hurt him but will distract him from the bad behaviour, if you do it regularly enough it should break the habit x
