I Wish I Could Save Them All!

Not sure if I'm allowed to say the name of the place, but I would love to name and shame them. We have decided on toffee for my brown girl and Lola for my white princess. I really hope that the boar gets saved too, they did have another cage advertising boars but I couldn't see anything in it so hopefully it's just the one now. I would like to report them but I don't know what for. I'm not sure it's illegal to keep pigs in that way even though I xo think they weren't looked after well. The girls are currently hiding which is only to be expected. Lola's ears are filthy and her white fur is stained brown from feaces. I will see how they are tonight and try to clean them up a bit if they let me x

@BB3 I'm glad you have raised this - we do ask that members do not name and shame on this forum. If membrs have concerns about welfare please report directly to RSPCA, trading standards etc but please do not name and shame on this forum.

I am glad they are safe but unfortunately paying for them has just perpetuated the problem. This is not rescuing. I know our hearts can rule our heads but this is not the answer. Addressing the welfare issues with the manager, reporting to the local authority and the RSPCA but not buying them. I don't want to make you feel bad but this is the harsh reality of the breeding world. They are lovely though x

@pig in the city I am with your approach 100%

Well done on saving those poor girls. They are going to have a very happy and healthy now!

I was in a similar situation to this not long ago, I went into the petshop saw the Guinea pigs were in bad condition so reported it to the rspca. I went back a week later and Guinea pigs were in a worse state so ended up buying a little baby girl who turned out to have ringworm. I only bought her because she looked like a female version of my fudge who passed away so head ruled heart and I got her. That was in May and I contacted the rspca several times after that and took loads of pics of her but I never heard anything back from them and when I called to see what's been done I was told they cannot tell me anything over the phone even though I reported the shop?!

Anyway my boyfriend rang the shop and told them peaches had ringworm and they gave me the money back and treated all their Guinea pigs too so I was happy that I did get her because they now keep the Guinea pigs well looked after. Let's hope this shop sticks to what they said and don't sell anymore Guinea pigs. I too wish I could save them all I've always said if I win the lottery I'd buy a big house in the country and take in all unwanted Guinea pigs and let them live out their days in the bliss of the country side :)

I have visited several places since this and seen things I don't like about the way the Guinea pigs are kept but have been put off calling rspca because I feel like they didn't take me seriously last time and said they would let me know and never have and I don't want them thinking oh it's her again calling up about Guinea pigs again so I have come home feeling upset and useless :(

I know what you mean, I will try reporting this but I'm unsure I have a case to he honest. When we see animals like that we just want to save them. How is the little girl you bought now?

The most important thing is that they are OUT of the situation whether they were paid for or not. At least we can all take comfort in the fact that the place you got them from claims they are not getting any more in.

:agr: too !

I can't see the logic in financially rewarding a pet shop that gives bad care.

However, what''s done is done. The pigs are with you now @BB3 and there is no disputing they'll get better care with you.

I' ll look forward to hearing how your pigs get on .

Pigs come in all shapes, colours and sizes and different breeds result in different temperaments. The first thing you should be deciding on is why you want to keep pigs for pets in the first place. After that it then gives you direction as to which pig breed would better fit your needs and the appropriate pig care your pigs would then receive.

To be quite honest l think its a myth about the breeds having different temperaments, l have looked after every breed at the rescue and their personalities all vary, largely due to the experiences they have had. If piggies don't match up to peoples expectations then that's when problems arise. I agree people should look long and hard at why they are getting piggies and research their needs fully. Then us rescues can match the right piggies to the right family, irrespective of breed

She's all better now thank you:) she's really friendly and likes being handled think that's because I had to give her her ringworm treatment. She's soooo cute bless her.

I got a little boy from a local rescue before getting her and he is so friendly and loving, he's healthy and happy and the rescue were so helpful and bonded my boy to him and they get on like a house on fire and I told myself I would never buy from a petshop again but when I saw peaches in that state I couldn't get her out of my head. I believe every animal deserves a loving home no matter where it came from. I couldn't deny her a home because she was from the petshop but I do agree rescues are without a doubt the best option and cheapest because you know they are healthy. But pigs will be pigs and tug on your heart strings :) can't wait to hear more about these 2 little beauties :)

Glad to hear it, I'm looking out for ringworm on my girls, they have been treated for mites now but toffee has a little bald patch on her back I need to keep my eye on, it's not sore or anything. They have both had a bath, hair cut and ear clean now so are looking good lol. I'll post pics soon, did you use cream for ringworm? X

I advise you get your guinea pigs checked by a vet.

This is the only way to ensure correct diagnosis and correct dosages of treatment.

Please do not home treat on suspicion @Stayc1989 . Only a vet can formally diagnose and correctly prescribe treatment in the correct dosage. Home treatments can mask the true nature/extent of any condition and make it harder to diagnose and treat effectively.

Please get her checked by a vet @BB3 for a formal dagnosis and treatment. If it is ringworm you will need to isolate, quarantine, deep clean and treat with a proper treatment prescribed by the vet. I'm tagging @helen105281 and @Wiebke for advice.

Please get a proper diagnosis and DO NOT treat on spec; you can do more harm than good, espcially by under- or mis-treating!

If it is ringworm, you have to be aware that it is the most transmittable issue between all mammals, other pets and humans included. There is currently a fair bit of fungal around, due to the warm and relatively humid weather, which is not necessarily ringworm.

@Stayc1989 : We do strongly advise not to home treat on spec. Are you aware that by UK law only a vet is allowed to diagnose, treat and prescribe medication for an animal upon physical examination?

Hiya, I just wanted to give an update on Lola and lolly (previously toffee) after they had the all clear and a chat with the vet last week we decided to start introductions with our other girls. It went surprisingly well, we did it slowly over a few days and sessions. There was a bit of rumbling and telling off but by the third time they were chatting away well. So today I decided to give them lawn time together. That went well too.
I have disinfected the cage, new bedding etc and I have also extended it by two feet. They are now all in together and sleeping in their fleece Forest. I have also added a small shelf with extra hay and food Incase they need to get away from each other and have limited the hideys for now. I'd love to know what you think. So glad the introductions went well. Cage looks great!
I don't think it's a bad thing to have hideys in at this point, just make sure they are hideys with multiple exits rather than just a single entrance

It's so lovely when introductions go well.

The cage looks lovely. I think they may like a little stool or tunnel to sit underneath but so that no-one can get trapped.

Ok so I have had a bit of an experience this morning, first off I got the girls, pics to follow. The lad in the shop must have only been about 16! I asked to have a look at the girls and that I wanted them in a high side box to check them over, he was chasing them round trying to get them so I told him to hold the box and I would pick them up. Luckily they eventually froze. After closer inspection I noticed one of them had a crusty ear, they are both girls. I asked him to get the manager so I could discuss this and that I wanted a mite treatment thrown in for each. He came back and said his manager will not give me mite treatment and she would knock off 2 pounds for the one with the crusty ear! I didn't know what else to do, I couldn't leave them there so o bought them and the mite treatment. I'm so upset as I noticed they also have a lone long haired boar just laying with his head in the corner of his box cage! I have to say OT was quite an upsetting situation. Here's the pics and some of her ear.

Adorable, if they have crusty ears it's mites, I had that with one of my babies, you mean to say you left the, poor thing making you feel guilty. You could always get it & give it to a rescue!
