Below is our precious Tyrion (formerly known as ). I got a call from an acquaintance on Monday asking for me to take her daughter's guinea pig because she didn't want him anymore. We have three precious boys at home who I just got situated in a cage together so I was sort of scared to get another but more scared to leave him somewhere he wasn't wanted and my daughter had heard stories of how this girl mistreated another piggie she had... who I found out Monday had died. We went to "look" at him but I knew darn well I wasn't going to leave him there. I asked her what she was feeding him she said oh some guinea pig food from Wal-Mart and then I asked her if they had been feeding him hay and she said no we didn't know he needed it. OMG! She then said he was lucky if her daughter gave him water! He would wheek when he was out! It took all I had to hold it together. I took everything thing she had for him including the small cage he'd never been out of and extra bedding... thanked her and escaped with him. Well it felt like we were escaping with him. Poor little guy. Such a sweet personality and incredibly enough looked good despite his situation. His toenails were curled from not being cut so we trimmed them as best we could, he had bright eyes, great appetite, no drainage or signs of mites. We are newbies to piggies so trimming his nails was major for us, we were so afraid we'd hurt him, I had the flashlight out making sure we didn't get in the quick! Anyway we got him into a 3 x 4 C & C fleece bottom cage and took the plastic base off his old small cage and set it inside so he'd have something familiar and he could hop in and out of it to run around. After sniffing and sampling the big pile of hay I put in his cage he started to popcorn and race around. When I reached for the bag of cheap food he had been eating to mix with Oxbow I noticed a ragged hole in the side of the bag and realized it must have been beside his cage and he had to chew through it because he didn't get fed. I just started crying, how could anyone neglect this sweet thing? I gave him 1/2 of an Oxbow vitamin C tab, a urinary health tab and a small leaf of green lettuce to start with because he'd never had fresh anything I didn't want to shock his system. It's been three days of love, unlimited hay, water, good food, vitamin C and fresh veggies... his poo is now normal (it was sort of soft) & he is no longer shedding. I'm trying to get a good look at his teeth, he's eating fine but to be sure I found a vet 45 miles away and I'll take him next week for a once over to make sure I haven't missed anything and then we'll put him beside our other 3 to see how they might get on. I am utterly and completely in love with this little man and so glad we were the ones they called to come get him. I know it sounds harsh but that is the only thing they did right by him. I'll never understand why a parent would buy a pet for a child and not make sure that pet was looked after. This family is pretty wealthy too... no excuse for not being able to give him everything he needed...... What is wrong with people?

You should be extremely proud of yourself for getting this little one from that awful situation. Well done for biting your tongue and getting him out of there.

He has found the most loving and caring home with you and its sounds like you are doing everything right. Isn't he a beautiful little dude. As I am sure you are doing because you sound really clued up, keep weighing him regularly so you can get a handle on his weight.

Well done once again and I hope to hear lots about Tyrion, great name - Game of Thrones fan?

Will do, we have a digital scale just for our boys!

He is a wee handsome boy with a great hairdoo like Throne's Tyrion! That is for sure!

Yes big Game of Thrones fan. The name was fitting... seemed like they tried to kill him and he still escaped with his life! ha ha!

Well done you! That is a lovely happy ending to something that could have been so tragic. Children like that should have the same treatment inflicted on them as they inflict on the pets their stupid parents let them have!

You are so right!

What a gorgeous boy - and a lucky one that he has a wonderful new piggy mummy! Well done for getting him out, poor little pigwig x

He's adorable. It's a shame how he's was treated previously. I think there should be some kind of test you have to pass based on animal care before you own each specific kind of animal. And If you fail you don't get the pet. (Oh well I can dream)

It's not the child's fault! Parents are responsible for the animal, not the child. She clearly didn't know how to look after him properly, and that is the parents fault for not making sure he was looked after properly.

Oh he is so sweet!
So happy that he has found a caring and loving home with you!
I can't understand why people mistreat such sweet little animals?!

I agree, but, I knew how to look after my animals as a child. I did research, my parents made sure I knew what I was doing. My dad even made me build the hutch for one of my guinea pigs. All this was before the days of the internet, it was the 1970's if I wanted to get information I had to go to a library and search for a book! Hutches were built from wood, no C&C cages! I had to really want that animal.

Oh yes. We did not live in a city either the library was miles away. The problem is parents, but having animals should give the child a responsibility. Parents should ensure that is the case. Having animals should teach children, not only how to look after an animal, but commitment and responsibility. Unfortunately these values are sadly lacking these days.

When we were children my mum made sure they were fed and watered but cleaning out was another thing. My poor bunny went three to four weeks between cleans.Would not happen in my house. My kids are taught to look after them properly. It is only as I grew up I realised how wrong this was.All my animals are cleaned out regularly and my grass cleared of dog mess every day.He is totally pignappable.I would have taken him too.How old are the three that you have together?Unusual for a threesome to work

Well done! It is so bonkers that adults can just walk into pet shops and walk out with these sweet animals and then treat them so bad. It costs more to buy a toy guinea pig than a real battery operated one - makes no sense :hmm:

Good job you got to this wee man before the owners could do any more damage.:)

Oh the poor little thing. I am so happy he is with you now. Reading his story brought tears to my eyes. It is wonderful you rescued him.

They could not tell me how old they were (the only place we have to get piggies is Petsmart 45 miles away, the closest rescue is about 300 miles from me :( ) but I think they are under 7 months. We got Sebastian at the end of June, Boomer 2 weeks later and Ferris about 2 weeks after Boomer. They squabble a little bit and I'm sure it'll get worse the older they get but they have a really big cage to get away from each other. It is "L'' shaped one wing is 2 x 5 with a loft and the other is 2 x 4. I'm going to expand it to 2 x 5. They have three of everything and a separate 1x2 kitchen off the main cage.

So glad that he has a loving home now!

His story sounds so alike to my Tilly's story, except that the one who should have cared for her properly was 22 years old, not a child! :hb:

Wow unreal! The girl who had Tyrion is about 15. I think she might have been tossing him in the air. My daughter had heard stories about her. This morning he was running around his new cage and popcorning like crazy. He is an amazingly resilient little guy. I'm so glad he's happy with us now! I just need to soak his little front feet... his nails are caked in poo. I was trying to let him get settled with us before I did it. He's had a busy week.

Poor thing. Does my head in wondering how people can mistreat and neglect their pets. I wish there was a ban from owning pets that could be put on people like that!

I can't believe that sweet little animal was being so mistreated! :( that is great that you saved him though! :yahoo::clap:
