So, it's looking like Reuben may have interstitial cystitis . The vet has prescribed Cystease . I am familiar with the IC diet - but just wondered what people thought about Reuben having grass.

I really don't want to stop him having grass time as he loves it so much .

Not sure Lisa. But hope the Cystease helps poor Reuben feel more comfortable.

It all comes down to the severity of it. Grass/grass forages are a no go for crunchie, they cause massive flare ups. But her case is severe.

Try switching to a low calcium, grain free pellet such as Bunny, Vitakraft emotion or JR farm grainless. Stick to timothy hay at the moment, and add in grass once everythings settled down to see if it causes a flare up.

Make sure he is drinking enough, as alot of bladder piggies are poor drinkers which aggravates the situation.

Crunchie is on a high dose of cystease- 1 capsule twice a day. But its helped!

Hope it all settles down soon.

Thank you . I have had no luck getting mine to eat a grain free pellet

I'm sure they would eat it eventually, little fussy bums! Crunchie was the same, but eventually ate it when she realised she wasnt getting anything else! She is on a pellet free diet now- strictly timothy hay, filtered water, IC veg and bladder/vit c supplements! This is only because her IC wasnt controllled for a year and her bladder is so severely damaged. Threw the kitchen sink at her with bladder treatment to avoid the bladder flushing op- she had 2 dentals due to spurs from lack of eating from the pain. She has been stable for a short while now, so keeping my fingers crossed! The cystease has been great, so good on your vet for prescribing it so quickly!

I remember being told Readigrass is a definite no no and that grass can also be a trigger as Adelle has said.

Pellet wise, just to let you know, Vitakraft Emotion has been discontinued but there is a possibility that it could be relaunched under the sensitive range. I am only going on what I have been told though.

What dose of Cystease is he on?

Surely grass is a natural diet for them. I feed s hay and grass diet with just a few nuggets as a treat, a couple of times a week and a small amount of veg and have never had a piggy with a bladder issue.

You would think so, wouldnt you! Crunchie only got grass in the nicer weather, and not all that much of it. So it certainly didnt contribute to the onset of her bladder troubles, but i know if i feed her it now they have set in- she has a flare of painful and bloody wees. Its a shame- all piggies love grass!

What dose is that in mg?

Debbie, I think as Adelle says once an issue has kicked in grass can be a trigger. I remember pigs with IC at clinic who flared when they had grass but were able to have it before the IC started.

I think you just have to work out what triggers the symptoms in your piggy. I think every piggy is different. I agree with Debbie that grass is their 'ideal' food and unless it definitely triggers a flare up l would continue to allow him grass time. I personally use oxbow essentials timothy hay pellets, but restrict the amount given.

ive managed to get one of my herd eating bunny basic, but had to go could turkey..for 3 days, then they ate them ,also seem to like rosewood grainfree pellets, but the calcium is not low.
