Hi all, quick question is iceberg lettuce poisonous to guinea pigs. I just gave my two boys a tiny piece out of a salad mix by accident (it didnt say it on the front of the packet) Should I be worrying i've been really cautious as to what i've been giving them cant believe I missed the iceberg.mallethead

Iceberg lettuce is NOT poisonous. I know it says so on several guinea pig sites, but it isn't. Iceberg lettuce doesn't really contain anything of value, though, so it's a treat rather than food. Mine go crazy for it :)

Veggies with a high water content, like melon, cucumber and iceberg lettuce, has been linked to bloat, I think, but I've not experienced any problems with it.

Thats a relief, knew I could count on you for a quick reply. I'll make sure I read the back of the salad mixes in future. Where would I be without you (probably trawling the internet getting more and more freaked out). Big thanks again:<>

Definitely not poisonous. Full of water and very little nutrition. May give your pigs the runs if they have lots. xx

Guinea pigs can tolerate iceberg lettuce more than rabbits, but if they have too much it'll still give them the runs.

I used to give it to my 2 guinea pigs last summer, but after one died, the lone one was getting too many veggies (otherwise they'd go to waste) and it gave her diarrheoa. I was terrified she was sick and would die too, but then I found out it was just from the lettuce. I just fed her dry food and hay for a few days and she was fine. :)

The less watery lettuces are more nutritious anyway :)

Well i've got to say i give my piggies lots of cucumber and also broccoli and they have never got bloat and they love it- i think they are fine in moderation, a good mix of veggies works well i think.
