Of a 10-12 week old guinea. Weighed mine today n just wanted to check their getting on ok, thanks!! :))

My Aby sow weighed 660g at 12 weeks, my Rex sow weighed 608g at the same age, yet Rexes are generally considered a "larger" breed. Hope that helps as a guide :)

The Aby was only one of 2 in her litter, the Rex was one of 4.

How much do they weigh? Are you giving them unlimited pellets, alfalfa hay etc they can have that whilst they're so young :)

400g is the weight of an average 6-8 week old pig.

I have just weighed 2 boars - one is 10 weeks - 550g. the other is 7 weeks - 440g.

Unlimited pellets, good quality hay and not too much veg at this stage so that they fill up on the nutritionally balanced pellets which will provide the proteins and fats they need to build their body mass.

Only thing out of that they don't have is alfalfa, unlimited everything else. Their pellets/hay rack is never completely empty come breakfast/tea time. They have fresh veg etc morning & night. I have different hay for bedding than what I use for feed. I will check if it has added alfalfa, don't think it does though. Their weights are in an earlier post :)

Are boars normally heavier than sows? Mayb I should cut down on the veg & concentrate on the hay/pellets?

Thanks!

Hi Suzy,

I have a 9 week old sow that is only 300grams,when I got her she was only 280,is this really bad!Sorry to jump in on the thread like that - just wondering!

Thanks!x

The standard practice for rehoming is a minimum weight of 400g and 6 weeks old. This is to ensure that the babies are thriving once weaned.

It saddens me to hear of tiny little piggies being homed at low weights and/or under age. I understand that many people would be unaware of these standards but this is why doing your research before acquiring any animal is vital.

Mine appear v happy n healthy. I wasn't sure of the ideal weight for rehoming. I can't say what they were when I first got them but can safly say they don't feel/seem under weight at all :))

Hope all is well with the other gp's mentioned in this post. All I can advise, as others have stated is un limited hay/pellets etc. Keep a close eye on the weight n go from there x

I wasnt aware myself, but I knew she was a very small piggie for her age because when my two babies were her size they were around three weeks old.

she is happy and eating and putting on weight but does have a skin infection at the moment and was in the vets with it,so she is on baytril.

Thanks!x
