Hi everyone

I wondered if there was an 'ideal' weight for guinea pigs.

Handsome Jambo, our boar, weighs in at 1370g and, his wifey, Primrose is around 950g.

I have been told he needs to lose weight but I like to think of him as big boned!

Thanks!
Jude

He seems to be a fine weight to me. You don't want him to lose weight as an ill guinea pig loses weight very fast and if he loses weight theres a bigger chance he will survive from the fat stored up. Piggies can rarely be overweight. He seems an average weight to me.

If you want a rough idea of weights here are my four guinea pigs

Ryou - 1256 He's my biggest piggie

Sakurai - 1029 My only female piggie

Romano - 1046 he's my eldest guinea pig and almost 5 years old

Bakura - 899 he's only a young guinea pig and still gaining weight.

So honestly I wouldn't be worried about your guinea pigs. :)

Some guinea pigs are naturally bigger or smaller than others too.

Thank you, Julesie, that has reassured me!

Hi! Both piggies are within the average adult pet range of guinea pigs at the peak of their lives, one at the top and the other more at the bottom, but if you are worried, you may want to reduce the pellets to the half to handful of pellets (ca. 10-20g) that mature guinea pigs need in a day and instead encourage them to eat as much hay as possible. That should take of any small overweight.
