One of my guinea pigs suddenly had a gray and cloudy eye earlier this week. I feared it was cataract or the eye was blind or something similar. Luckily I got an appointment next day. Turned out it was piece of a grass straw that was trapped in the eye! The veterinarian quickly removed it and gave prescription for some eye medicine. Poor thing must have had the worst eye irritation for several days! The visit to the vet was quite expensive but for any pet owner that is part of the responsibility and definitely worth it to take that pain and irritation away. Hopefully the eye will heal quickly now and I expect to see it bright and shiny like the other eye and the eyes of his brother he lives with.

Just a warning to anyone else who may discover something similar!

Yes, hay poke is awful. Thankfully you went straight away to see the vet and got treatment for him. Some owners leave it too late and then the poor piggies eye becomes ulcerated, infected and blind. Well done you for spotting it, I’m sure your little man will be back to full health in no time x

Thanks! It sounds more common when you say it like that. I don't have any friends with guinea pigs so this forum is a great help. Most things that happen to the guinea pigs are new to me.

Hay poke is incredibly common. One of my boys did it just two weeks after I got them.

Yes, they are so prone to diving head-first into the hay without worrying about their eyes! Glad your piggie is okay and it got treated quickly!
