If it's not one it's the other 🙄

You must be heartbroken I am so sorry for your loss 😥
Popcorn happily over The Rainbow Bridge Treacle watch over those you've left behind 🌈

Oh no I’m sorry. Sending you hugs. ❤️

You gave her a chance of beating the stone but unfortunately the call to the bridge was just too great. Popcorn high over the bridge gorgeous Treacle. 🥰

I am so very sorry for your loss. We can always only do our very best - and you have done that - but we are never in full control of circumstances and outcomes, nor can we ever choose what from and when our beloved ones die. We only ever have them on a loan that can be cancelled at any point.

But what we can do is give them as many happy days of their life as possible. In the end, it is your daily care that makes the the biggest difference in how your pets experience their lives. It is just usually overshadowed by the often stressful and sometimes traumatic circumstances of our loss.

I sincerely hope that you are hanging in there. If you find that you are struggling with strong feelings of failure and guilt (which are an expression of how deeply you care and not that you have failed and are unable to move past that, please try to speak to a trained volunteer at the (free) Blue Cross pet bereavement platforms or open a thread in our new End of Life and Bereavement section for our community support. Talking about the strong emotions and what bugs you most can really help. Every bond is unique and has its own unique grieving journey.

Thank you so much everyone.

Now I feel a bit calmer I'd just like to explain what happened. In the end Treacle didn't have surgery to remove the stone as the vet had noticed that Treacle's kidneys looked 'abnormal' and she said it was more urgent to check this out than to deal with the stone. She said she was pretty sure that this kidney problem was what was making her so poorly and the stone was just an 'incidental finding'. She took samples to send away and I brought Treacle home with instructions to get as much recovery food into her as possible.

Fast forward to Saturday morning, 6am and she was very unwell. Completely refused the recovery food, wouldn't move and her weight had dropped to 660g. I phoned the vet as soon as they opened and they said bring her in. They took her temperature and said she was a bit cold and they thought her body was starting to shut down. They said they would keep her there for a few hours for observation and call me in the afternoon. When I got back it was clear that she'd deteriorated even further. I very much wanted to bring her home and try to feed her and look after her but I knew that wouldn't be right so I agreed to put her to sleep.

I can't stress enough how wonderful they were. It wasn't my usual vet - they only have one vet in on Saturdays - but another one that I've seen before and she was really lovely, as was the nurse and the receptionist. There was no pressure, they gave me time to say goodbye to Treacle and afterwards they brought Toffee in so he could say goodbye.

I just feel so shocked because although she was an older lady- about 5yrs when I brought her home to be Toffee's new friend last year - I've only had her for 8 months, and that feels far too short.

She was so lovely. Such a sad loss. Sending wishes for comfort 🙏 ❤️ Graze sweetly over the bridge little Treacle 🌈

BIG HUGS

I am so very sorry. Kidneys going wrong is sadly not at all uncommon and there is very little vets can do about it. It is also extremely painful. :(

Please try to take comfort that you have given her a loving and caring home in her old age. She may not have had much time with you, but it has really mattered to her. And you have not let her die miserably in pain but have given her a send-off that allowed to her make her journey carried by your and Toffee's love.

Sometimes, things just don't work out like planned but that doesn't mean that you have failed or made the wrong choice somewhere along the line.

I'm so sorry. I've been in similar situations and it's so traumatic, I really feel for you. I'm glad the vet staff were so nice, it does actually make a difference doesn't it, to know that your beloved piggy was in such caring hands, and to have some compassion towards the owners.

You did all the right things for her and she will have known how loved she was. I am sorry the time you had with her was cut short, but don't doubt how much happiness you gave her in that time, she was loved and cared for and happy. That's all any pet could ask for. Take care.

Treacle's owner has already explained in sufficient detail what happened and I doubt if your case has much relevance here. In fact it's probably the last thing she needs to know about right now. If you can't be tactful, please leave her in peace.
