I have an Absynnian guinea pig, and whenever I would pet him, he would growl at me. So I thought I would go find out why. Well, I found out that, with those kinds of guinea pigs with rossettes, its hard to not pet their fur the wrong way. So he likes me a lot more now that I've been careful...

That makes sense! I think one of mine is part abby, he has rosettes on his back/ rump but not his head/ shoulder area. He doesn't like being stroked on his back, but head, the top of his shoulders and chin rubs are fine!

Ahh... @1GuineaPig1 Welcome to the forum! :) How many piggies do you have?

We have had 3 Abby's throughout the years... Here's what they liked
Putt - Shoulder
Vimto - Head and nose rubs
Widget - Head rub

@sport_billy thank you for the warm welcome! :) I have two guinea pigs, Bacon and Eggs. I got them a while ago. Eggs is an Absynnian and Bacon is the smooth-coated kind. I love them so much! They are actually the first guinea pigs I had that were actually mine, the other one was my mom's.:clap:

My Absynnian is only 7 weeks old - so only just getting him used to being handled- so not got round to stroking yet, - have to keep two hands on him to stop him struggling to get away:no:

@Sara412, I understand that. It took me ages just to get my smooth-coated guinea pig Bacon to warm up to me and stop struggling, and he still does it a lot. Some advice, if you haven't done it yet- get him out, give him a treat, put him back in, repeat once a day until he is used to it.

Hi and welcome!

Most piggies have a soft spot somewhere and some don't like to be touched at all in certain parts, especially when they are feeling our of their comfort zone.
You may find this thread here interesting: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/...stincts-and-speak-piggy-body-language.117031/

I have got four abys at the moment, but have had several more over the years. They are one of my favourite breeds, as they often come with bags of pigsonality.

Thanks- managed to have a cuddle each day (5days so far) but he's not keen to eat from my hand - tried all sorts of treats- but I will keep going have noticed he seems to watch fascinated when I rub the head of the other boys - so hopefully he's thinking I must be quite a nice human if the others all stand still and let me pet them:D

I have four Aby's and none of them seem to mind being stroked in the wrong direction. They don't even mind being brushed in the wrong direction.
I would have said that maybe the one who growls has a sore spot in the coat somewhere, but he would squeak in pain rather than growl. I don't think I've ever heard a guinea pig growl. I didn't know they could!

My Lola just sits there and lets you do what you want to her, she is very laid back. ;)

@7sqeakers, I don't think that's the case with all Abby's. I heard that it makes their skin feel weird, kind of like when you sometimes do something to your hair and it kind of tickles. I guess maybe your piggies like that! :)

I get verbally abused by my abis :soz:.... OH gets his fingers almost taken off on a regular basis and they are so greedy. Patch hates me stroking or even cuddling her, she will not tolerate it for any length of time, I might be able to stroke the tip of her nose I'm lucky. Rambo tends to zone out at times so I take my chance to have a quick stroke. She generally like to be strokde underneath her chin and cheeks although hates it when anyone goes near her botty. Don't blame her really about that one...

hi beautiful piggies jess, I have 3 absynnian's, Gizzy likes to chat alot and loves a cuddle, tod can be nippy but still likes a cuddle, ben is very terrioral and will click away at me and he bites if you go near his cage, even when he is out playing, if you do not show him his cage he is completely different, I have all types of breeds from absynnians, coronets, a texel, sheltie, pervians, english crested, alpacas, rex, short haired piggies, long haired piggies, and my favourites are the absynnians, they have characters which are unlike others, its hard to put into words, all piggies are special in their own way.

I have one aby and he is a nutter. Noisy delinquent nutter! He also hates to be petted because it always ruffles some of his fur the wrong way!
