We have been using the Bob Martin, my little friend hay as recently it has been fairly green. This batch isn't great, today i have found a second big spiky flower head in there, I'm not sure what they are but I'm worried about the piggies getting their eyes or feet spiked, or even if they are safe for them to nibble on.

So far I have removed the flower heads as the girls have just pulled them out of the rack and not touched them.

It was probably a spike off one of these that got stuck in my finger the other week.
Any ideas.what they are?

Thistley things...possibly the cause of maggies throat abscesses. I dismissed the suggestion at the time, as she'd only been given excel hay, then last week * found a load in a batch of the barn dried forage.

I've written a light hearted letter to them including the original packaging (and my £1600 vet bill) :))

ouch! I noticed some hay I got a while ago had a disclaimer on about not being able to remove any sharp bits or something similar. I got some rubbishy stuff from 99p shop! Only good thing about it is they dont eat it just sleep on it!

I wouldn't have imagined that the odd thistle would cause problems, but would probably remove them if I found them in my hay. I use Animal Dreams timothy hay usually and have never had any problems. All this wet weather will not help hay production one bit.

i found quite a big piece of sharp stone in my packet! wasn't amused at all! i use huwbryn meadow hay now from my local pet shop it's cheap & my girls love it.x

I used to buy the same hay from my local ASDA but I stopped when I noticed it become really spike and straw-like which I didn't like giving to my piggies I case the jabbed themselves! Its unfortunate though because I used to get really good bags of green hay from them but its a hit or a miss now. I got in touch with the company and sent photos from 2 seperate bags, 1 lovely and green and the other yellow and straw-like. They sent me a letter of apology and a voucher.

You should send them a letter with what you have found.

i found some of that in my local nottcutts hay. I returned it and they gave me a refund after getting it again in a few different batches I'd buy. It hurt me a lot just reaching in and I didn't want my boys getting hurt possibly from it.

I switched to a new hay which my boys have loved, and its bigger and cheaper over all but sadly now whenever I give them it they turn their face up and don't eat it. I'm not sure what to do now as they are the only two hays I can find. I'm just hopeful its the weather as the boys used to dig into the second brand of hay I buy.

I used to buy some locally farmed meadow hay from.dobbies but stopped after three batches in a row had massive lengths of bramble in them.
Now I buy a much larger bag for an extra pound from just for pets and have never had a problem :)

This is terrible. Have to say I've never had any problems with Dust Free Hay Company. If they are able to keep good standards, then why is no one else?! People have said hay has been bad this year but I've not had any problems whatsoever.

Hey Amy,

Can I just ask which particular hay you get from the Dust Free Hay Company? I am thinking of trying them as I am having real problems finding decent hay at the moment but they have several to choose from & I'm not sure which is best for guineas.

Thanks

shiny :)

I will write them an email with pictures and see what they say. I still have the packaging so have the batch number and manufacture date. I have had other batches recently that have been that thick it was like straw. I 'm sure it won't do any harm to drop them an email. :)
