Hi,
My guinea pig is 5 years old next week, he's never been interested in hay and hasnt eaten it when it's been given to him.
He had a brother who used to eat the hay so I thought if would have learned to eat it from him but he never did.
IV tried him on different types of hay but he just doesn't eat any of it.
I read online to cut back on treats to see if he shows interest in the hay but that hasn't helped either.
He is loosing quite alot of weight recently and IV been in and out of the vets with him who thinks it's just his ages because there's nothing wrong with him. His teeth have been checked and his had loads of tests done which have showed nothing wrong with him.

Basically I'm asking, what can I be feeding him that will make him put on weight? He eats nuggets and has vegetables but he's still loosing weight. How do I get him to eat the hay?

It would be a great help if you posted a bit more about his day to day life.
What exactly do you offer him, and what does he eat in a day?
Does he live alone or with other guinea pigs?
What sort of cage and where (inside/outside)?

Then maybe people can offer suggestions as to how to increase his interest in food.

He has lives inside in a large plastic cage with a wire top. His brother died a while ago and igg just won't except being paired with another guinea pig (we have tried a few times)
In a day he gets about 25-30g of nuggets a day. What ever he doesn't eat I take out the next day. He gets carrots, some kale and a small piece of broccoli a day. Along with his hay. when he wouldn't eat the hay, I was advised by the vet to cut back on the veg as he may be selective feeding. Some days he finishes his nuggets, some days he doesn't. He has his hay in a hay rack inside his cage

I advise you put some soft hay on the ground for him - as he may be happier eating it from the ground rather than a hay rack.

As he is losing weight , it'd be worth giving him a some food by syringe feeding ...

I'm wondering if he's grieving. I appreciate you have already tried to find him a companion - but not all guineas get on with each other and it would be worth seeing if your local rescue could help find
