About 10 minutes ago I was sat here on my computer and I heard this strange 'cheeping' noise coming from the kitchen and it was Iggy my lilac. This is about the 4th time I've heard her do this now and I never ever heard a guinea pig before her do it. The first time I heard her I was convinced a bird had flew in and got stuck behind her cage, I couldn't believe a guinea pig could make such a noise.:))

Luckily my camera was nearby so I tried to film it but it was too dark and she was hiding but I got the noise.

You are so lucky that your piggy makes this lovely noise. Ive seen it on youtube and other stuff. Doesnt it mean that they are very happy piggies when they make birdie noises ?

I don't know but she certainly looked calm just after she made the noise. She's the only guinea pig in over 30 years of having piggies that has ever made that noise and she's done it about 4 times now that I've heard.

Here is the noise.

I had to creep in slowly then she wouldn't hear me and stop.

And here is a picture of the 'culprit' taken just afterwards.:))

I have only heard the noise about 10-12 times. There seems to be no particular reason as to why the pig involved starts to "sing". The only thing that I have noticed is that the other pigs remain silent during the "performance".

Oh yes that's it 'chirping':))
I have two other piggies in the kitchen - goodness knows what they thought.:))

That was absolutely charming, I'm so pleased you managed to tape it.

I've wanted to hear this since I first read about it, and last week I did! It was a boar who seemed to be singing to announce the arrival of babies in the cage next door! Mesmerising, he did it for ages, such a lovely sound!

It's a pity I couldn't have got her on the video but if I'd turned the light on she would have shut up I think. Last time she did it I rushed in the kitchen and the dog barked and she stopped.rolleyes

I've only heard it a few times in 20 years of piggy keeping, you are very lucky to have heard such a beautiful sound :)

OMG congratulations x)
You've been honoured to hear the chirriping sound x)
I have a recording of it on my mobile from a girl in the UK from her piggie (now RIP 8...) he used to do it often..........such a beautiful song they sing x)x)x)x)

My Munch has done this 3 times now, for the 2nd 2 when I went into her room it was when I found Harry and then the next day Fudge dying :0
Its a wondefull sound though :)

I've only heard it once from one of my guiea pigs (Mischief RIP)... Didn't know what it was - first time ever you hear it it's eerie, especially as it went on for ages!

But you certainly have an opera singer on your hands!

One of my girls started singing last year. Took me by surprise as I was upstairs & she was downstairs. I was convinced a bird had got in. She continued this over 6 weeks or so then Fudge died 8... & she hsa not done it since. It is so wonderful to see her do it & the others in with her just staring at her with hay hanging from their mouths :)

Well she has done it a few times now but touch wood I've never had a piggy or anything else die afterwards. I just wish I knew what made her do it.:))

I just played your video and my pigs didn't like it atall. I think it an is alarm call. When Milo did it I'm sure it was because Bette was unwell and he knew.

Patrick's song was totally different, and my pigs don't get upset by his tune. It seems to have less urgency and more of a tune.

I do believe there is more than "one" chirp.

Amazingly enough I have only kept pigs for over a year and I have heard it 3 times from 2 different pigs, both with a different pitch.

It was weird really because the other piggies never even bothered when she did it, they just carried on eating.:)) She hasn't done it for a bit, we must be due a song soon.:))
