I was in P@H at the weekend and they had a little grey boar who had black/grey scabbing on the top of his ear where it joins the head, we told the assistant who quarantined him.

I phoned yesterday and he was still in quarantine being treated with bayril.

OH has been in today to check on him and the scabbing has spread down towards his eye, he is still in quarantine but 3 others in the pen he was in now have the scabbing in different places, OH has spoken to manager to get them all treated.

What do you think it could be? It is obviously contagious the baytril doesnt seem to have worked.

I am thinking it could be mites or fungal any ideas as I am real worried about them

Thanks

My boys have recently been suffering with what the vet diagnosed as mites - they were scratching which caused large black scabs - just dried blood. Rufus was affected first and he is all cleared up now, but unfortunately Rocky has been caught out too and he has a nasty patch on his face which seems to be healing despite his scratching!
The vet gave them a spot on treatment (which was repeated two weeks later - I think they need another one too) and he gave me a tube of Fuciderm gel to apply directly to the scabs to soften them, from reading the leaflet it seems to be like a cross between Savlon / Hydrocortizone / E45 for animals.
They have been very good boys about having their 'medicine' although they do like to shake their heads so everything gets covered in specks of gel!

I wonder whether the piggies at Pets at Home have the same problem as Rufus and Rocky? Sounds similar. And (I'm ashamed to say) our piggies came from Pets at Home - although I do consider this as a rescue of sorts! There is a definate lack of vetinary care for their animals.
Does the pet store have an in-house vet? Or are they relying on the knowledge of the staff to decide how to treat the little piggies?

Thanks Happycath

have no idea who is treating the piggies :0:0

They didnt appear to be scratching when we saw them which is why I thought fungal.

Does anyone know good websites that show pictures of mites and fungal infection so I can look and compare?

Hmmm yes scratching was the first thing that was obvious with my boys (even obvious to a beginner like me), so perhaps it is something different entirely.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Keep us updated

Ok have looked at Sophies photos it doesnt look like ringworm.

Read Gorgeous Guineas and it doesnt sound like either mites or fungal.

Read Peter Gurneys health page and it sounds most like static lice, its in the right area and right colour like dark dandruff, but there are no photos also looked on guinealynx they dont have picture of static lice.

Thanks for suggestions will keep you updated.

He is being treated with ivermectin and being kept isolated for a week
