Illness Again.... Poor Piggies!

Ok back from vets. Must say I'm so happy that I took my "straight jacket" from chucklebunnies. They were able to manage xrays and bloods with no squirmy piggie! So much better than sedation. In the end I went to my tried and trusted vet at lytham.

It doesnt seem to be teeth, they suspect bladder or kidneys she kindly wee'd all over vet then me so she didnt have full bladder for x ray. Good news was she had food in her gut.

they tested her wee and it had blood in it and it was very watery but I did give them cucumber for the ride to keep them hydrated.

ive been given some vetergesic pain killer as metacam will damage her kidneys if they are the problem..

I'm so stressed as she is so young and I feel like I may loose her. just been and bought some different nuggets the burgess with blackcurrent and some of those complete cubes and some alfafa timothy hay to try to get her to eat I will put her normal nuggets in too so she can take her pick.

ive decided to go back to syringe feeding again to get her weight back up whilst I am waiting for bloods as if she needs an op I want her to have a little more weight on her. Got some metayone tonic and probiotic to give her also.

is there anything else I can do for her in meantime? She is sitting in her wee a lot so going to keep babywiping so she doesnt get wee burns. @helen105281 have I got everything or is there anything else?

So has she had bloods taken?

This could even be something like Interstitial cystitis if she has blood in her wee but wait to see what the tests show. I think you are covered for now with the pain relief, Metatone, probiotic and syringe feeding.

They use a similar thing at piggy clinic, they're brilliant.

Hope you get some answers.

The results are back. Lacey has high white blood cell count so looking like an infection. Kidneys are fine so we are thinking bladder or a mass but no masses showed on xray...

I have to give her 0.5ml cat metacam for a week or so and see how she goes. if no better we need to go back. she has already had a course of baytril is there another that may be more effective for bladder?

Yes it is and would need to be prescribed by the vet. Lots of vets use it for UTI type issues.

Ok thanks ill get her booked in again. They wanted to see if metacam is working first I think so will make an appointment for a few days time.

And I got to bottom of the dominance thing I think they were testing her tk make sure she wasn't going to be a danger to the group being ill. Alls well now and lacey and squeek are inseparable. Ruby seems to be on outside so I am going to add one of mt little girls once they are all through quarentine and I figure out their personalities.

Evening feed turned into a struggle of wills tonight. Didnt even get to food lacey has discovered the art of slapping the syringe from her mouth. I thought she would like metacam but she doesn't seem to. I managed a bit of probiotic before she had a fit!

Tomorrow I am going to see if I can handfeed her some fiba first not holding up much hope as none of my pigs seem interested in it. If this is a calcuim issue it must be from her dried food as she doesnt get a massive amount of calcuim rich food.

she has been on a mixture of burgess excel and p@h nuggets lately and I know ratio isnt great in either!

Does either burns dandelion or plaintain have lots of calcuim as I do feed those types of herby bags weekly.

I think dandelion can act as a diuretic if fed too much? It could be the dry mix, both of those have high protein and calcium and also lots of additives etc and molasses and soya.

I think it is dry food. I heard vet uk do a good one but I found the web site a tad confusing and wasnt sure which one was good for them.

could anyone tell me which one is low calcuim?

@helen105281 I also picked up canesten oasis today whats the doseage please?

Feel a vet visit coming on sooner rather than later... tonight she just didnt seem right she still screams when I pick her up. On top of that she seemed very hungry. She was reaching for the syringe when she was ready for the next one which made me think she must have been hungry :( I managed to get two sessions done in last two hours. After I put her back the second time she was eating hay as well. I'll see how she is tomorrow am and that will help me decide whether to take her tomorrow or Friday. I have a feeling that the metacam is wearing off before next dose she is having 0.5ml once daily in evening. The only reason I am questioning taking her tomorrow is that if its inflamation it needs time to work.... it was only her second dose tonight.

I'm so worried about her as I lost my poor george the same way before I had chance to find out what was wrong He had scans xrays bloods but they were inconclusive, he died before I was due to go back to vets, he went suddenly within about 30mins of showing signs of going.

Also lacey only weighed 843gms tonight :(

Thanx I hope she pulls through.. I think ill go anyway tomorrow it cant hurt to talk things through with the vet again. I want to see if we can stretch her pain relief out throughout the day or give her more than one type? ill ask for antibiotics also as obviously the baytril failed to work.

Definitely ask if the pain relief can be split am and pm as they have a fast metabolism.

Thanks will do. I do not know why but I still think her teeth are the issue! I am so suspicious of vets which I know I shouldn't be... is there a way I can check her back teeth? The xray didnt show anything so dont think it is a mass...

Hmm ok. I have been up all night syringe feeding as I have one of those feelings I think she may go before we get to bottom of it. I have got a wee sample this morning and tested with the quick analysis strips. it was showing all normal except Ph which was 9! the highest on the strip... not sure what that means?

The wee was white also a milky colour @ vets other day it was definitely pink. She is still in pain around her tummy / back end underneath which would be around the bladder etc...

She also feels like she has loose skin on her front half I'm getting so worried! She will be going to vets today I am going to call them when they open @ 9am

I will be taking a wee sample with me & is asking for an ultra sound would this show anything that an xray didn't?

Ph can be high, it tends to be on my pigs, is she a good drinker?

Is good that the other readings are ok, my maddie's were all off the scale.

Ultasound can show different things so is worth asking for.
