Illness In Guinea Pigs

i took our 2 year old pig to the vets yesterday as he had lost weight rapidly and was weak and off his legs. He seemed fine on Saturday but went downhill over night. The vet thought he had pneumonia and kept him in to feed him. She called me later to say she thought he may have had a stroke as he could not walk properly or hold his head up. She said we could bring him home and feed him over night or have him put to sleep that night. I decided not to prolong matters as it was upsetting the children so much. We are all devastated including his poor brother who seems very sad and quite. Did I do the right thing, could he have got better if I'd brought him home and cared for him. I don't know how much the vet new about guinea pigs. And what do I do foe his poor brother apart from loads of love.

First off I'm so sorry- I too experienced those symptoms with my first piggy who had meningitis- at least thats what I belive as my vet didn't know. I too made the decision to put her to sleep because she wasn't eating at all and was in so much pain. I'm sorry you had to make that decision but you did the right thing because as far as I'm aware there isn't much else you can do. As for the poor brother yes lots of love but also maybe another friend in the future? X sending hugs your way

Thank you I feel so guilty letting him go he was my little man and loved him so much. That has made me feel better.

I'm so sorry. You 100% made the right decision as you prevented him any suffering, it is the kindest thing we can do for them. It is just so hard to make that decision. I am a firm believer though that is better a day to early than a second too late.
