(which don't take much!)

I have read that its a no no to give your piggies grass from when you mow it, but then i've read that you can give them grass that you've cut by hand, so what's the difference?

I have seen that some have got soft toys in with their piggies... won't they chew them?

Can they play with tennis balls?

Thanks
Mandy x

Grass ferments very quickly, in a mower it'd get hot due to the motor which would speed up fermentation so I assume thats why :-) fermented products can cause gut issues in pigs.

No tennis balls are not suitable. Any soft toys must be suitable for new born babies which means no moveable parts. They will be safe if chewed.

Thanks, I got some but haven't given them yet as i wasn't sure cos i read it somewhere on the net.

Essentially this but it ferments faster because it gets chopped up and bruised by the mower so the sugars in the grass are released - sugar being what ferments. It can cause bloating which can be fatal.

As for soft toys the baby safe principle is a good one but I'd still check for signs of damage as a stuffing could pose a major danger. I've found pigs tend to prefer chewing harder things and leave soft furnishings alone though.

Also, with grass cut by a lawnmower it can be contaminated with oil or grease off the mower.

If you have gathered grass somewhere else to bring home for the pigs, how long would it last in a bag before fermenting?

My pigs have a plastic ball with a bell in it, much like a kitten toy. They love pushing it around and bashing it into things
