I got my guinea pigs yesterday. I knew i was a little allergic to hay so i went to my allergy doctor to see what he thought of me getting a guinea pig he said it was fine to get them since i was only a .5 out of 5 allergic to it. I got them yesterday and felt great but now i feel horrible i feel like I'm under water idk if i need to find them a better home? I'm using oxbow hay cause everyone said thats the best hay to buy for allergies. I also use gloves and a mask etc. It doesn't bother me when I'm handling the hay it bothers me when I'm just in my house (even when I'm not in the room) i really don't know what to do. I want to keep them but if I'm feeling like I'm dying all the time i won't be able to provide a good home for them. Any advice?

I use anti-histamines as I am also allergic to hay.

Just realised that the links I sent you are useless because you are from the US.

Sometimes compressed hay ends up very dusty and the dust just flies everywhere. I hope this helps :)

I am also allergic to grass/hay pollen. I simply take a low level anti-histamine all year round and up it during the grass pollen season.

I have grown up with guinea pigs and have come back to having them as an adult; I currently have 24 piggies, 6 sanctuary fosters and 18 rescue adoptees.

There are alternatives to loose hay, which you can feed to your piggies. Do you have compressed hay cubes or cookies for small pets in the USA? These will be completely dust-free and easier to store. Also less messy than loose hay!

I take medicine from my doctor and i also have a basle spray i will try compacted hay other wise my parents are making me get rid of it

I'm not allergic to hay but I am extremely allergic to my rats. Some good antihistamines will see you right if the meds the Dr gave you don't make any difference.

I always had piggys when younger without a problem. But when I got my boys this year (after a pigless few years) I suddenly seemed to be reacting to the hay. Very very mildly mind. I find within a week of being at home the symptoms subside (and the pigs are in my bedroom.) A basic antihistamine definitely helps me too, so may be worth a shot (:
