apparently its going to be hotter then last year, well it was much too hot for me and we lost our dog becasue of the heat it was too much for him and he had fits so not only worried about Max but my piggys as well, anyone got any ideas for being prepared,
they are saying here that the winds going to get bad again and to check your insurance cover gulp! my pigs OMG hope the sheds stay up and the roofs stay on,
think I must always find something to worry about lol

No I'm worried about the heat too. My bunnies and two pigs are in the shed. Fine in winter but it's on the sunny side of the garden so there's no way they can stay in there in summer. So I'm planning on hutch/run combis for their summer accommodation which can then be moved into the shed for winter.

me too... I'm getting another shed end feb,so i'l have one for buns one for piggy's , OH bless him is going to insulate & put elec in & then i can have fans & bug zapper ! tho a freezer would be good then i cud just freeze loads pop bottles full of water !

I hated last years heat, but it didn't trouble the animals too much though I know it can be a problem for older dogs with their ailments :(
We have a shady and sheltered yard which faces North which is fine for the guineas and on the hotest days, the ones that can mingle, mooched about there most of the day. I used fans indoors when needed,,,stuff the electricity bills ::)

The wind doesn't bother them as they are blissfully unaware of it indoors, I do find it unsettling though.

and yeah, stuff the electricity bills,I dont pay them anyway dad does, mwahaha

OH NO... I hope its not going to be another hot summer this year! I hate the baking weather now as I always worry about the furries.

For last year I got an aircon unit which I plug into the shed, which helped cool it down a lot.. but worry about any power cuts! while I am out. :(

Its bad enough for pigs when its hot, but chinnies are even worse with temps. I so hope its not going to be so hot this year.

Bug zappers are really good, I got one last year, and still keep it plugged in even now. Its zapped a few nasties over the months...well worth getting one.

where did you get yours from? ( bug zapper)

Its the wind that terrifies me too.The media don,t make it easier headlines today were storms to batter britain ::)I am also terrified the roof will blow off the shed :(
Its not too bad in the summer as i have fans in the shed.

The piggys I have now I didn't have last summer but I did have my rabbit and my now bridge piggy Meeka.

Mine always go into runs everyday in the summer and only back to the shed at night and luckily we have a north facing garden so there is plenty of shade. I also put frozen bottles wrapped in towels in the run which the rabbit loved to lay up against. My dog probably suffered the most - so we set him up with his own paddling pool and he would have a mooch in there if he was too hot.

Whilst I don't particularly enjoy extremly hot days (unless I am not at work ;)), I am really looking forward to some nicer weather and when the animals can get back out into the garden.

This wind and rain is doing my head in!

:( didn't know about the hot weather, was bad enough last year. Got enough fans for everyone to have (1 per hutch) and enough fly zappers so hopefully going to be ok :)

oh no, i hate the hot summers here. My boys seemed to be fine last summer, i found that bokki was itching quite abit as hes long haired and i think the heat was getting to him, so this year he is getting a shorter hair cut.

I have my bug zapper and spray which i sprayed on blankets and towels and laid them on top of the cages last year. I'm also going to freeze water bottles and wrap them in towels :)

you can get bug zappers from ebay but i got mine industrial ones costing me £ 80 for the two inc 2 spare bulbs, and i got them from my sons catering company he gets stock from, will find address if needed

Thats the one I have got, it came from Nisbets too, and its been brilliant. I still have it on now, its been on ever since had it in summer. Its well worth it. I have bunnies too so always worried about the potential of fly strike! Its nice to know its one extra precaution against preventing it.

I find mine makes a nice 'night light' too when they are bedded down for the night. Nice for the furries to have a bit of background light! ;D ;D

Forgot to add... last year when it was so hot...despite the aircon and fans running in the shed all my long haired piggies had severe, and I mean SEVERE hair cuts. They were all turned into short haired piggies. I hated doing it to them but rather them be that way than suffer due to their long locks. I know it spoiled their looks but it was best for them at the time.

yes mine did as well but you can see the glow from my front gate and MIck said it looks like you're growing pot, and we might get druggies breaking in expecting drugs and finding pigs instead so we turn it off at night ( hes an ex copper so knows what hes on about even If I dont lol)

and I agree mine had severe haircuts as well, anything to stop them getting hot, the zapper really pings when it gets one and to begin with the pigs jump, imagine the whole shed of pigs jumping same time I had to laugh, but they got use to it and I'm sure some to them smirk thinking got you! to the departed cooked fly

lol,and noise ( zzz bang)

I really hate the heat. My skin is so pale and I get so hot and sore.

Last summer Rocky had a very severe haircut too. Also I let them all have cool baths quite often - just water, no shampoo. Riffy loved this.

I get great satisfaction of that little zzzzz bang! knowing theres one less fly around sheds are full of spiders and they are no worrys but flies grrrrrrrrr we use to have a quail and she use to eat any swotted flies i managed to get her then she ate the zaaaped ones bless her she was lovely, and in a funny way the flies went back into nature nothing like recycling eh! ::)
the heat makes me feel ill my hubby when he heard next years going to be hotter said OMG months of her being a cow moooooo! I just cant cope with being hot

I cant wait to hear the zzz bang thingy,it just sounds so satisfying ;D,I cant stand hot weather myself either so I feel sorry for anything furry, all our dog does is sit panting even though hes been shaved down :(

if we are lucky enough to still have our 14 year old mutt max around next summer will be having his coat shaved off as much as possible, not going to risk losing him like we did his brother Charlie last year and will be buying a small paddling pool just for him the kids one is too high for him to get into, do you think we spoil him ::)

nope I dont but the paddling pool idea is a great one, never thought of that ;) ;D

the winds reallly bad here today :(
and ive seen the floods already on tv this morning,i feel so sorry for people that have that happen,I wouldnt know where to start

we are getting a battering the Island is once again marooned all ferrys etc cancelled not too surprised would you cross the Solent int his weather ? no way !
as we live on a hill we are getting roof tiles rumbling the dogs blowing inside out lol he hates the wind poor love, the pigs were especailly pleased to see me this morning, the wheeking was way more then usual, think they might have been worried about the noise, we have had trees down and buildings damaged hope the kids school roof stays on gulp! batten down the hatches girls its going to be rough,

I have heard the weather in Cornwall is terrible.

It's not that great here ;D

Large fizzy drink bottles full of water and frozen in the freezer, cover them with a thin cloth bag so pigs can lay next to them.

Cover the top of the run with a sheet or similar for shade, piggy version of a gazebo ;D

Like the paddling pool idea, think I will put a new (small) cat litter tray in the run with a couple of inches of water and see what the piggies think.

OMG! The wind here is terrible! :o I'm in East Sussex nearish the coast. I've got to catch a double decker bus lately - me no want too :-[

Just popped home for lunch. All the fancing down one side of the garden has gone over. >:(

Piggys are fine in the shed - seem completly oblivious to it all!
