I just read the following when I was googling to find out whether it's ok for guinea pigs to eat leek as part of a shop bought stir fry mix. It tells you to avoid certain things that I have seen in a list of things to give them.

"Make sure the guinea pigs gets fresh vegetables. Green leafy vegetables. Most of your guinea pig's treats should consist of green leaf lettuce, escarole, red leaf lettuce, curly endive, and cilantro, all of which have a good calcium/phosphorus ratio (important in preventing stones). Vegetables to avoid include any vegetable in the cabbage family, iceberg lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, beet greens, and radishes. Each guinea pig will require a minimum of 2-3 servings per day. Check out the "Guinea Pig Diet" tab under the website mgpr.org . It has a lot of information about servings and links to other websites."

What are peoples thoughts?

Hmm, I've never heard that they can't have cabbages or broccoli, etc. I've always fed them to mine, so hope they can have them haha. Don't think Lexi would be impressed if I stopped feeding her broccoli. As for the leeks, I don't really know...they're part of the onion family aren't they, so they may not like it. Sorry I haven't been very helpful haha, hopefully someone else will reply soon as I would like to see what others think on this too.

I thought they were meant to get brocoli because it had vit C I may be slightly wrong there .....

I'm sure Iceburg is bad for them, cant remember why now, but brocolli and cabbage i can only assume they mean because they are gassy perhaps?

Cabbage and broccoli are fine as long as you don't give too much, which can lead to bloating. I think small amounts of iceberg are ok but nutritionally it isn't that great. I don't think they'll eat leek

That is a nice contradictory American version of the "do not feed any lettuce; it is bad for guinea pigs" advice I got from some people when I started having guinea pigs again a few years ago! rolleyesrolleyesrolleyes

Seriously, you can feed most veg as a part of a varied diet. Green bits from the onion/garlic family like spring onions or leek can be given occasionally in small quantities, but should not be part of a regular diet if that helps you. You do not have to pick out every bit of spring onion or leek from a stir fry mix as long as the piggies do not get it all time. We do have a list of veg and fruit guinea pigs can eat ("shopping list") as a permanent sticky thread at the top of the food section.

You might find the foods lists on Guinea Lynx helpful if you do want to do a bit more research into what is good and what is not so good:
