Hi All.

As a "new" guinea pig owner (my two boys I rescued in June of last year) I am starting to freak out about tomorrow. Squirrel (the son of Stan, my other pig), went to the vet on the 9th of July - my regular vet was away so I saw another one. He looked in Squirrel's mouth and said his teeth were fine and diagnosed a URI, put us on antibiotics and Metacam (a dose of .25ml cat). The antibiotic is Enrocare 0.50ml twice a day. After 5 days Squirrel was not improving and I emailed the vets and said as much. The vet replied and said I did say 7-10 days. I was still not happy and phoned for an appt but they didn't have any space to see us. I went to another vet and to be fair to him he said he was not a guinea pig expert but looked at his teeth and said he has something around one of them and they don't seem right to me, go back to your own vet urgently. My own vet was still away so I contacted the rescue and they recommended me to another vet so the next morning we went there. He got what was stuck on Squirrel's teeth off and upped his Metacam to .35ml just once a day and said he needs his teeth sorting and recommended us to a place called Magnolia House in Christchurch which is an EXOTIC vet (I so wish I had known about them sooner). Esme saw him on the Saturday morning, so the poor pigs had been in the car Thursday, Friday and Saturday - I took Stan to help Squirrel with moral support.

Esme was great - she said his teeth are growing incorrectly and he needs to be put out to have them reshaped after they take x-rays which will determine if there is an abscess or root damage. She kept us on the antibiotic and upped the Metacam to 0.7ml twice a day which she said is perfectly safe and will help us to keep him eating. She also said not to over feed the critical care as he is still trying to eat and to tempt him with whatever I can to make him eat. We have all the usual veg (some grated up, others very small, mashed banana, grated apple and carrots. Porridge oats, wheat bran, oat hay, timothy hay, alfalfa hay, Cotswold as well as softened pellets, nom noms and grass that I'm picking for him to save his energy. Thankfully we are holding at 950g (he's usually around 1125)

Tomorrow morning I have to get them both to the vet for 9.10, Stan for moral support and take with me all the various foods to tempt him after his operation. I have every confidence that Esme and her partner Stan will perform the op perfectly - they operate on guinea pigs nearly every day. She assures me that Squirrel will only be under for half an hour - any longer is not good for them and better to do it in stages if required. We do not know what the on going will be at the stage.

Having researched I know we are in for a tricky few days trying to get him over the op and the pain and I am literally starting to freak out. Reaching out to anyone who has been in this position who can give me a very welcome boost that all will be ok.

Thanks Karen

Sending you hugs Karen having poorly piggies is never easy. I've not had one with teeth problems but I know that feeling of panic when they are ill. You have done all you can and got your piggy expert help. If Esme is the vet that trained here at Highcroft (I think she is) then your piggy is in good hands. Esme got me through 5 guinea pigs with pneumonia in 2022 she and her fellow intern at that time were both excellent piggy vets.

Thank you - She was wonderful but I am doubting my own skills at doing the best for him

Holding you in my heart. ♥️
Having to face piggy surgery is very stressful for us.
You have made the best decision you could based on the information and advice you have been given.
You know the vet is experienced.
It doesn’t stop us worrying though.
Look after yourself.

Hope all goes well. Hugs 🤗

PS - my recommended stress busters are coffee & chocolate.

Wishing you all the best for tomorrow!

Hoping all goes smoothly and Squirrel's recovery is easy 🙏

Wishing you and sweet Squirrel good luck today Karen
You can do this ! You are stronger than you know
Esme will help Squirrel and you can and will do the rest …as your love and devotion shine thru ❤️
We’re here to support you both 🥰

Sending you all good wishes for today. The waiting is the worst part for us humans. We are here to support you.

Sending best wishes for today!

Good on you for reaching out with your anxiety. For me, it always helps to be honest with myself about what I'm feeling, then tell somebody even if just a forum - that seems to lessen the anxiety.

Hi All

Firstly thank you, thank you and thank you for your lovely comments - it means such a lot to have your support.

We are home. He's not feeling very chipper but I've managed to get him to take his pain meds, his antibiotic and some critical care and at the moment just a couple of very small mint leaves was all he fancied of the things I offered him. He is currently tucked up in bed with Stan keeping a very close eye on him.

There is good news but some not so good news. The first news is that his teeth weren't too bad - they have done a bit of reshaping but nothing too major and all of his roots and jaw seem fine so they are hopeful this will be the one and only time for this but obviously we will be keeping a good eye on it.

The not so good news is that he has an abscess in his mouth beyond his teeth which must be so so painful. It's leaking pus into his mouth which must be just awful and no wonder the poor little soul has not been doing terribly well. They took a swab today and have sent it off for analysis at the lab to see if they can get a read on the type of bacteria it is and see if the current antibiotic is the best one for the job. She is not sure what has caused this - it may have come from something in his lymph gland she said, although she X rayed his whole body and could see nothing sinister lurking about, it may also have been a stab of something that he was eating which has become infected..... So at the moment, whilst he has had a bit off his teeth which might make him feel a bit more comfortable we aren't anywhere out of the woods yet.

Please keep us in your thoughts and I'll give you an update when we have any news. Meantime if anyone has had anything similar I would love to hear from you - any clue to how to get rid of this would be so helpful.

Hoping all your piggies are well and happy and again I thank you so much for your support - you are all wonderful.

Karen and Squirrel x

I’m pleased he’s home and doing ok. This happened to my piggy. He went in to have his teeth done as he had stopped eating and lost weight. They found his teeth were ok but there was pus from a tooth root abscess.

His abscess got so big really quickly (4cm). He had to have it marsupialised and stitched open. The good news is that he was fine in the end. But the bad news was it took a long time to get him to eat for himself as the really strong antibiotic (Zithromax is great for abscesses) completely wiped his appetite for the 6 week course. We tried Baytril first and it didn’t work at all. Also he will need a good amount of dog painkillers, twice a day and a probiotic to be given 30 minutes before or after the antibiotics.

Please feel free to ask any questions. I’ll post Peppers thread here as there is lots of advice from everyone in there.

Dental? Pepper is off to the vets tomorrow

That's really interesting and I am going to send this over to the vet tonight. He's been on the equivalent of baytril since 9th of July and she's given me Baytril to start as soon as I have finished the current one. 6 weeks is a long time but I am glad that he eventually healed. There has been no mention of it being opened - it is open within his mouth and oozing pus into his mouth. I will send this over right now and thank you - do you have the name of your vet as they may wish to chat? Thanks Karen

Aw poor Squirrel, hopefully you'll get the results back from the swab quickly and can get on the right antibiotics. As @weepweeps has said zithromax (azithromycin) is normally good for abscesses, although of course it depends on the results of the swab.

At least if it is leaking pus, it's draining somewhat as opposed to getting larger hopefully - although I can't imagine it's much fun for Squirrel poor little guy!

That is a really good point and fills me with a bit of hope @Wheekallweek - you are quite right if it's weeping at least it is coming out. I just wish I had known about this Exotic vet to begin with - I do feel like I have let him down a lot. I felt like writing to the initial vet and I may well do but I need to choose my words very carefully

It’s great that it’s leaking as hopefully it won’t be able to fill up. Good luck. I’m sure he will soon be feeling much better. It was The Cat and Rabbit Vets in Northampton. They were amazing. You haven’t let him down. You’re doing a great job. ❤️

Ah bless his little paws ❤️
I’m glad he’s home - you’ve had great advice from people here
I’ve no experience of this but just wanted to send hugs and support 🥰

Bless you @weepsweeps - I am keeping everything well and truly crossed. You are all so amazingly lovely and I am so grateful for your support. I will mention this to Esme at Magnolia House Vets.

Update:

Last night was pretty awful for an hour or so - he was so distressed and just crying and breathing really badly - I honestly thought I was going to loose him, but he quietened down and was pretty quiet over night and when I checked him periodically he was ok so I didn't disturb him. This morning he has managed to eat quite a lot of very chopped up and grated veg, a bit of softened pellets and some very chopped up hay and now he's on to eating some grass I've picked for him. Stan is in the indoor run giving him time to eat his food. I had him on my knee and was hand feeding him bits and did his medicines and then he did a big wee on me - he was on a towel but it must have been a big one as it went through (I didn't mind in the slightest as it's a really good sign). thanks for all the good wishes they are making a big difference and lili my Guinea Pig Rescue support has also been amazing. K
