I have just heard one of my piggies squeel as if in pain. I have observed the pair of them for over an hour to find that Puddles is scratching his bald patch (he has mites and has lost hair) with his teeth so hard that he is squeeling. I am so annoyed as I have an appointment tomorrow at 9 at the vets to take the pair of them for their third injection for mites. I found the mtes early, seeked the vets help asap and three weeks later he is in so much pain because of them. What could be going on. I am really mad that the treatment he has been given is having no effect. I can't wait for 9am tomorrow to getr this sorted once and for all. They cannot be treating this right surely

Perhaps they still have mites in the bedding? I cleaned mine out and disenfected the cages. Chucked out the hay i had left as i thought they were in that. Thankfully 2 shampoos and two injections each has done the trick nicely for me. Hope they get well soon. Do you know what is in the injections?

I have no idea what is in the injections, maybe I should ask tomorrow. I am still using hay although a different make from what I had been using. What could I use instead till the mites go.. shreaded newspaper? I dunno

Are you sure its mites and not a fungal infection? Just a thought :-\

I switched from Russell rabbit hay to their straw. I'm still not sure where the mites came from, but they seem to have gone. If you're using a different hay it's prob not that. Erm.... out of ideas now. :(

Well I went to the vets this morning. I saw a different vet. He was a partner in the practise and by gum that made a difference. he gave both my piggies a thourough looking over and explained in detail wha mites were and saying that in his opinion guineas are born with mites just as we are with crawlies in our eye brows. The piggies ability to live with them changes after an upset or when piggy is run down therefore tipping the balance and mites get control. I know you all knew that and so did I (thank you!) sort of but it was nice to have a good non rushed cosoltation with an obviously caring vet. He said he has observed piggies behaviour over the years and that he has seen piggies with the mites whatever bedding is used and that I should continue with hay.

I spoke to him about Puddles shrieking in pain and he said he wasn't itching so hard as his sores were well on the way to healing indicating that the mites were on their way out. The treatment was working and he is doing well as non of the sores have been itched back open. He also didn't inject my piggies, he gave them what he called 'spot treatment' on the back of their necks. Has any one heard of this way of doing it. No shrieks from my boys but an uncertain mum as i'm unsure that will work.

All in all my boys have to go back in 2 weeks time for their final treatment. They're pigging out on strawberries as a treat! My brave fellas.. where's my treat though - had to control a toddler and 2 piggies in a waiting room that has 2 cats and a dog!

Spot on is fine ;) Now if you want to know what they used in the injections if SHOULD be written on the receipt they give you after you have paid. I treat my piggies myself I buy the stuff from my best friend shes a vet ;) Hopefully your piggies are now on the mend from those nasty mites.
