Merrypigs Sanctuary
Adult Guinea Pig
Ahaha, not THAT kind of grandma, I'm not that old
We took in 3 piggies on Thursday - Flint, Dolly and Buttons.
They were very loved, but gosh they're so thin! The kids visited the vets today - we already expected either one or both to be pregnant, as Flint is not neutered. Turns out Dolly is having babies! She'd already had one litter at her old home with Flint's brother. We estimate about half way through, so her due date is about 19th March! Which is lucky as I've booked time off then for my birthday
Seeing her scan was a fantastic experience, you could see the spines, and feet too! Three little faces were forming, and they were all shuffling and shimmying
The photos really don't do the detail justice, sorry!

Mum to be Dolly:

Thank goodness Buttons isn't having babies - she's absolutely tiny! Just over 700g at a year old, but her body is teeny weeny bless her, I don't think she could even carry one baby! Her teeth are all chipped, but thankfully she eats amazingly so hopefully she'll chub up a bit over the next few weeks.
Bellybutton aka Buttonsprout:
Flint didn't get wonderful news
He's only 5 months old, but still very small. He's a Sheltie from a breeder. His old owner mentioned he has fits - his head twitches, then he shakes all over and then he flops on his side, waking up 5 minutes later. His brother (who fathered Dolly's first litter) had the same condition and passed away after a seizure! The vet had a good listen to his heart, which beats far too fast - even more so than just a response to fear. He also has arrhythmia. She asked us to monitor his fits (he hasn't had one yet with us thank goodness) - if he doesn't lose consciousness it's likely to be congenital epilepsy, same as his brother. If he does, she thinks its probably to do with his heart
Poor boy! I hope he doesn't pass his condition on to the babies too!
